About this deal

While the Seamaster can’t deny certain visual similarities with the Rolex Submariner, its diameter is actually slightly bigger at 41 mm. The relatively low price of this watch might leave you with some extra cash to spend on an alternative strap or bracelet. As far as the bracelet, the angular slope of the middle link makes it more exciting than a regular flat three-link. Aside from the direction of the brushing, it's clear that the steel case is a rip-off of the Q, with an identical shape and proportions. While not original, it does mean that the watch fits thin wrists very well, with no overhang despite the hooded lugs.

As you can see, there are plenty of high quality, stylish dive watches that look good on smaller wrists. Earlier this year in June 2022, Breitling unveiled an entire new generation of Superocean watches. Drawing their aesthetic inspiration from the cult-favorite Breitling Slow Motion diver’s chronograph from the 1960s and 1970s, the new Superocean watches forego their predecessors’ chronograph complication altogether and reimagine the model as a simple three-handed sports watch with plenty of water resistance and a distinctly vintage overall design. Rather than being an addition to the existing Superocean lineup, the new vintage inspired models were introduced to replace the previous generation of Superocean watches entirely, and this particular decision slightly puzzled some collectors. Prior to this latest release, buyers who wanted a modern Breitling dive watch could opt for the standard Superocean range, while those who wanted a diver with vintage styling had ample options within the Superocean Heritage collection. Now, all Breitling dive watches are more-or-less vintage inspired, with the standard Superocean drawing its inspiration from the 1960s and 1970s, while the Superocean Heritage is based on the very first Breitling dive watch from 1957.You might be asking yourself isn’t this the same watch listed above, yes it is. However, this one has a quartz movement, the one above is an automatic wristwatch. I just included them both because some people like a quartz movement. I don’t discriminate. Tissot is pushing the boundaries of robustness more than any other entry-level luxury brand. While these innovations are definitely appreciated by the community, their ability to produce these watches in sizes anyone can enjoy is often overlooked. If you like the vintage styling of a watch from the late-1950s or early-1960s but want the modern construction and specification that comes with a new watch, few brands can provide as much value as Longines. They have a historical archive as deep as any Swiss watchmaker and are positioned in a place to provide these timepieces for an affordable price to a wide watch-collecting audience. The Movado Heritage Series Celestograf has a lot going on in terms of complications but manages to keep it compact inside its 36mm yellow gold ion-plated stainless steel case.

The microadjustment pushers on the clasp can be slid up and down for an exact fit (it’s also fun to use). And finally, the Aquaracer runs on an ETA-based 38 hour automatic movement. Scaled-down sporty chronograph watches are few and far between these days, yet Longines makes a good one.Divers are one of the most popular genres of watches out there, both for those who take to the water and those who stay on dry land. But one of the biggest complaints is that dive watches are too big, and there aren’t many <40mm dive watches on the market. I happen to own a Submariner – ref# 14060, while a 40mm bezel width, the watch is smaller than the new model ref# 114060 which has a much larger squared off case. I also have a montblanc 38mm sport diver that fits my 6.75″ wrist perfectly. I have also owned a 36mm Seamster Pro 300 and found it somewhat small, likely referenced by the fact I’ve owned quite a few 40mm watches.

There’s one watch, in particular, that made divers so incredibly popular over the last few decades. The Quintessential Dive Watch Dive Watches are generally on the larger side of the watch spectrum. The vast, vast majority of dive watches in the marketplace are 40mm wide and larger.

Quick Take

It boasts all of the luxury qualities you expect at this price point including a crisp bezel, a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, beautifully applied details, and a Swiss automatic movement. Powering the Superocean 36 is the Breitling Caliber 17 movement, which is essentially a chronometer-certified, Breitling-decorated and -assembled version of an ETA 2824-2. As such, it offers the standard specs of running at a frequency of 28,800vph with a power reserve of approximately 38 hours. When it comes to the venerable ETA 2824, this is about as good as it gets, and since you also receive chronometer-certified timekeeping performance, the Superocean really isn’t the same as a watch that uses an off-the-shelf Sellita SW200. However, given the price point, it would have been nice to see Breitling give the Superocean something a little more special in terms of its internals — especially considering that the brand has access to Kenissi-manufactured calibers. That said, generic movement designs offer unparalleled serviceability, and if you want to wear this bright orange timepiece as a fun and carefree vacation watch, there is something to be said about having the option to get it serviced at virtually any competent watchmaker in the world. Vostok is a Russian watchmaker that started in the 1940’s making military watches. Actually everything they were doing at that time was for the war effort when the Russians were battling the Germans. In the early 2000’s they started marketing the Amphibia, although apparently they are built from earlier designs. The beautifully applied logo, for example, is adorned with the Rado anchor that moves around in its casing. Glashütte Original SeaQ Breitling is known for its aviation watches. Not so much for dive watches. Don’t let that fool you, Breitling makes a great dive watch. The Superocean has been around since 1957 in several iterations, the Superocean Heritage kind of combines a retro look with modern materials. Marathon GSAR Medium – 36mm

My favorite aspect of the watch head is the brown bezel. Brown is such an underutilized color, and the addition of this earthy tone compliments the off-white hands well. The off-white hands would look out of place with a more standard blue or red bezel. Before you rule this one out, think of its purpose and whether or not a quartz movement actually makes more sense here. I love mechanical movements as much as the next enthusiast, but if you’re looking for a robust and affordable engine for your watch, it is not going to be powered by a Swiss lever escapement and a mainspring; it will be powered by a quartz crystal. The Hydroconquest is still a very high-quality Swiss-made watch. In fact, Longines and Omega both belong to the same parent company, the Swatch Group. Dive watches (or “divers”) are perfectly suitable for business casual or smart casual attire, and they certainly won’t raise any eyebrows in casual environments. Along with their 41 mm model Omega offers a 36.25 mm (1.4”) model of their Seamaster Diver 300M watch.

Seiko 5 SNK793

The Seizenn Skin Diver from Chinese manufacturer Merkur is better specced than the Q and the larger M79 automatic, despite costing much less than either model. Personally I think a formal or dress watch should also be carefully chosen. Dropping the size to 36mm or 38 will give a desired look. Sorry but I disagree with wearing a dive watch on formal or business occasions, I’m aware it’s common practice however, not correct. Homage watches are a sensitive subject among enthusiasts. Whether you love or loathe them, you can’t deny that they are great entryways into the world of horology. Not everyone has the budget for a vintage Rolex or even Tudor Submariner, but thanks to Davosa, you can now get the look for a fraction of the price.
