About this deal

The new regulations state that it remains in FIFA's possession, secured at its Zurich headquarters, barring ceremonial requirements like the Trophy Tour and during the FIFA World Cup main draws and the final presentation.

Retrieved 26 November 2022. {{ cite web}}: CS1 maint: numeric names: authors list ( link) The Jules Rimet Trophy was the first iteration. It was used from 1930 to 1970. Brazil won it outright courtesy of becoming the first country in the history of the competition to become three-time champions (1958, 1962 and 1970). There were gold plates attached to each of the four sides of the base, on which the winning countries’ names were engraved after each edition. The Jules Rimet Trophy. (Getty Images)

Following the retirement of the Jules Rimet Trophy, FIFA needed a new cup. The soccer’s governing body invited proposals and received submissions from fifty-three sculptors from seven different countries. Eventually, Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga’s design was selected by FIFA as their new World Cup trophy. The subsequent trophy, called the "FIFA World Cup Trophy", was introduced in 1974. Made of 18 karat gold with bands of malachite on its base, it stands 36.8 centimetres high and weighs 6.175 kilograms (13.61lb). [2] The trophy was made by the Stabilimento Artistico Bertoni company [3] in Italy. It depicts two human figures holding up the Earth. The current holders of the trophy are Argentina, winners of the 2022 World Cup.

The new trophy can hold up to seventeen names and years, and it is likely to be retired following the 2038 World Cup. Unlike the Rimet Cup, which was passed from winning countries to the new winning nation, this one is FIFA’s permanent property. What Countries Have Won The Trophy a b Simon Kuper (2006). "Solid gold mystery awaits the final whistle". Financial Times. Archived from the original on 13 May 2007 . Retrieved 5 July 2006. On 19 December 1983, the wooden rear of the cabinet was opened by force with a crowbar and the cup was stolen again. [16] Four men were tried and convicted in absentia for the crime. [17] The trophy has never been recovered, and it is widely believed to have been melted down and sold. [18] Only one piece of the Jules Rimet Trophy has been found, the original base, which FIFA had kept in a basement of the federation's Zürich headquarters prior to 2015. [19]

FIFA World Cup trophy iterations

As we mentioned before, Brazil is the only nation to have won the Jules Rimet trophy on three different occasions. Two countries, Uruguay, and Italy have laid their hands on this trophy on two occasions. Germany – West Germany at the time – and England have had the honor of lifting the trophy exactly once. Jules Rimet Trophy Corbett eventually went on to hand the trophy over to the local police station and was detained for a while on suspicion that he might have been involved in the theft. He, however, had an alibi and got the clean chit. During World War II, the trophy was held by 1938 champion Italy. Ottorino Barassi, the Italian vice-president of FIFA and president of FIGC, secretly transported the trophy from a bank in Rome and hid it in a shoe-box under his bed to prevent the Nazis from taking it. [7] The 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden marked the beginning of a tradition regarding the trophy. As Brazilian captain Hilderaldo Bellini heard photographers' requests for a better view of the Jules Rimet Trophy, he lifted it up in the air. Every Cup-winning captain ever since has repeated the gesture. [8] So far, eight different nations have won the FIFA World Cup. Uruguay was the first nation to have won the Jules Rimet Trophy, or one can say a World Cup trophy of any kind. Overall, the Jules Rimet trophy has exchanged hands between five different nations. Sculptors from seven countries sent in 53 submissions for the new design but eventually, it was commissioned to Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga.

He suggested that the theft must have occurred during “an aversion of human eyes.” The exhibition was on two floors in a large hall and there were “at least two to four guards circulating the hall at the time.” Over the years, there have been two different iterations or designs of the football World Cup trophy. The trophy was eventually retired when Brazil won the World Cup final for the third time in 1970. Following their success in Mexico, Brazil was allowed to keep the trophy permanently, as per the plans laid out by Jules Rimet. Where Is The Trophy? The trophy stayed safe under Barassi’s bed until the World Cup returned after WWII in 1950 in Brazil. Barassi, who was integral to Italy hosting the 1938 edition, also spearheaded the operations for hosting the 1950 edition.

FIFA World Cup trophy: 1974-present

The Brazilian team won the tournament for the third time in 1970, allowing them to keep the real trophy in perpetuity, as had been stipulated by Jules Rimet in 1930. [14] It was put on display at the Brazilian Football Confederation headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, in a cabinet with a front of bullet-proof glass. [15]
