About this deal

It's a groupset that can give you what you want from a mid-tier road bike. Sure, there are a few niggles but they are tiny and can be overlooked.

The concept of this design is that the twin pivot design will apply equal force through each arm. So the braking will be consistent and deliver equal amounts of power and control. Phase 2 paired a 9 spd Alivio MTB mech. with a 34 tooth cassette. Not really a success but that may have been down to a cable kink problem. Are the latest Tiagra rear derailleurs compatible with 105 (5700) 10 sp. shifters? (And vice versa, ie are new Tiagra shifters OK to work with a 5700 105 derailleur?)This design isn't something we're used to seeing on the 105. It's only been available on Dura-Ace and Ultegra. Should you decide that you want to start with the 105 version, you will arguably have more options. Or at least, upgrading can be done more easily. Shimano says: "For the first time in its history TIAGRA supports internal cable routing, which gives the road bike a much more clean and professional look. Along with internal cable routing TIAGRA has also adopted the iconic four-arm crank design which is available in the popular gear combination for entry level riders of 52-36T and 50-34T. With the standard pitch cycle (bolt circle) diameter of 110mm both chain ring combinations are interchangeable because they fit on the same crank set. My plan to increase the size of my cassette to 32 teeth got very complicated when I was informed that Tiagra had a different cable pull to 105. Phase 1 saw me making do with 30 teeth which works fine with the 105 mech( despite it having a nominal maximum of 28 teeth).

If you're buying a new road bike with the latest Tiagra, there's no doubt about it, you're getting a better bike for your money. VerdictThe 105 isn't the only model that has benefited from upgrades. Tiagra's cables now run beneath the bar tape, which is how the higher-end Shimano groupsets have it. is also available in a direct mount option (you need to have a compatible frame and fork) where the brake arms bolt straight on to the frame/fork rather than via a central bolt. There is no Tiagra direct mount option. Disc brakes nb: the new sora r3000 actually is still with the old actuation ratio, therefore, you can use older shimano rear derailleurs with the new concealed-cable sora shifters without any issues. Overall, a Shimano Tiagra groupset is quite a bit heavier than a 105 groupset, but almost 200g of the difference is in the chainset While bikes with Shimano Tiagra are usually substantially cheaper than those equipped with 105, the margin between the cost of components is often a lot smaller

Plus, Dura-Ace and Ultegra are available with Di2 electronic shifting, and Dura-Ace, Ultegra and 105 are also available with hydraulic disc brakes, and Shimano offers both hydraulic and cable discs for Tiagra There is no need to upgrade the components at once. You can choose to upgrade to Ultegra or Dura-Ace as they need replacing. It's not as simple as upgrading your Tiagra groupset components one at a time. You can't make the 10 and 11-speed parts work together. Tiagra offers excellent value for money but 105 is certainly the better groupset and we’d recommend going for it if your funds allow because of the better brakes, the small weight saving and the upgrade to 11-speed. When it comes to rear derailleurs, this is where the 105 groupset differs from the Tiagra. The 105 R7000 is very different from the previous 105 models. It stems from the Ultegra R8000 design from the previous year. The other major difference between the two groupsets is that the 105 brakes are considerably better than Tiagra ones. They are a real highlight both in terms of all-out power and fingertip control.

The 105 hydraulic STI units for disc brakes are 11-speed, as you'd expect, while the Tiagra are 10-speed. The new 105 R7000 STI units are considerably streamlined compared to both their predecessors and the Tiagra versions. Both Shimano Tiagra and Shimano 105 use the same ratio of gear cable pull to rear derailleur movement, so you can fit a 105 derailleur in Tiagra system if you want to The figures for 11spd are 2.7mm x 1.4 = ~3.78mm pitch. The mech ratio is the same 1.4 but the shifter is pulling less cable, so the chain movement is less.If you need to make adjustments, on both levers this can be done using a screw-operated system. This is especially useful for those with a shorter reach or smaller hands are you are then able to move the levers to be closer to you. The lightness needed in shifting is similar (if not the same) to that of an Ultegra or Dura-Ace setup.
