About this deal

In terms of its premise, the book felt tailor-made for me. I loved the drama plus mystery vibes in the blurb. However, this doesn’t transform well to reality. The book seems like a hodgepodge of various genres – romance, suspense, family drama, literary fiction, domestic thriller – without doing justice to most. It will break your heart, too, when you read how this story unfolds through the personal viewpoints of Emma and Leo in timelines of the past and present day. It's a mystery more than a thriller with more drama than romance and I was amazed how the author created such a compelling and twisty story without violence of any kind. How refreshing!

Walsh masterfully shows both [protagonists’] points of view while maintaining an intoxicating air of mystery…a propulsive thriller with heart that will keep readers guessing.” My thanks to Pan Macmillan and NetGalley for the DRC of “The Love of My Life”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book. Sorry this didn't work out better. I read Ghosted a few years and loved it because it went in an unexpected direction. So I was very excited to sit down with the author's latest book, The Love of my Life. Thankfully it was a another great read. There's just something about opening up a book and not quite knowing what the author has in store for you. The fact Rosie Walsh is able to pull that off that feeling until darn near the end is pretty remarkable. The writing was competent and many reviewer's seem to love this story (a lot more than me). I just found the various plot points unlikely and the reveals a bit of a let down. Emma and Leo narrate the various chapters that start off strongly intriguing but as things become clearer, some things seemed to implausible to me. Most were explained away and the twists were interesting but given the fame of Janice and her very famous husband, Jeremy, who has reached out to Emma to Leo's surprise and confusion; I just couldn't shake how the media didn't unravel the mystery which wasn't well hidden nor that "surprising". Furthermore, the media parks outside Janice's and Jeremy's home but then seemingly stop and do not further mentions in the 24/7 news cycle. Huh? In fact, when Janice goes into hiding, no one seems to notice her presence at the place. When journalist husband, Leo stubbles across some documents his wife of ten years, Emma has been hiding, he is more than a little perplexed. He begins doing some research and realizes that a few friends have hinted that they know more about her than he does. Emma has been through many rough times, even recently struggled with cancer while pregnant. He has attributed some anomalies in her behavior to her bouts of depression. Now he isn't sure what is going on.

Walsh has a good ear for dialogue, and the mystery behind Eddie’s disappearance is a particularly satisfying one.”I have held you at night for ten years and I didn't even know your name. We have a child together. A dog, a house. O poveste de dragoste, învăluită în mister și secrete. Povestea Emmei și a lui Leo vă va cuceri dacă vă plac cărțile de mister & romance & cu acel ceva neașteptat. Walsh’s hugely compelling The Love of My Life instantly pulls you deep into the interior of a marriage. Part thriller, part mystery, part heart-wrenching love story, this is a treasure for book clubs everywhere.”

This is a book that for some reason, I was certain I was not going to like, and it totally took me by surprise. It's part domestic thriller/part romance, but wholly captivating, and I loved it! In a Nutshell: Great in bits and pieces but doesn’t come together into a cohesive whole. This might have ended up a strong favourite of mine if I could have connected with the writing style better. But the disconnect with the plot and the decisions of one MC resulted in a strictly average experience.

Where I struggled a bit was with the tone. Is the novel a slow-burn family drama? Or a domestic thriller? It felt a little like what you’d get if Anne Tyler and Lisa Jewell decided to co-author something. Comparison to either of those two writers is far from a bad thing, but I’m not sure they’d make great collaborators.
