The music for the film was by Bruce Fowler and Marcelo Zarvos. They replaced James Horner, who left the project due to creative differences. [11]

Griggs, Donald L. (2003). The Bible from Scratch: The New Testament for Beginners. Westminster John Knox Press. ISBN 978-0-664-22577-3.Not one of Forester's best novels, still a serviceable story of WW2 naval warfare, in the Battle of the Atlantic. Cmdr. Krause is a career officer in the US navy but the convoy escort mission he's leading is his first experience of actual combat and he's a mass of insecurities over his ability to command well. Travers, Peter (December 12, 2006). " The Good Shepherd". Rolling Stone. Archived from the original on January 6, 2007 . Retrieved 2009-04-06.

It's 1957 & a 20 y/o RAF pilot stationed in Germany wants to fly home to England for Christmas in his Vampire jet fighter of the day. It's a beautiful night full of stars but about 20 minutes into his flight things go terribly wrong with his instruments necessary to navigate and to add to his dilemma, his radio is out. Trying not to panic, he recalls his training for emergencies and begins to put them in place. Thoughts of death begin to creep in as he uses up fuel with no help in sight. Newsweek magazine's David Ansen wrote, "For the film's mesmerizing first 50 minutes I thought De Niro might pull off the Godfather of spy movies ... Still, even if the movie's vast reach exceeds its grasp, it's a spellbinding history lesson". [22] However, Peter Travers of Rolling Stone magazine observed that, "It's tough to slog through a movie that has no pulse". [23] In his review for the Chicago Sun-Times, Jim Emerson wrote, "If you think George Tenet's Central Intelligence Agency was a disaster, wait until you see Robert De Niro's torpid, ineffectual movie about the history of the agency". [24] Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian gave the film two out of five stars and criticized Damon's performance: "And why is Damon allowed to act in such a callow, boring way? As ever, he looks like he is playing Robin to some imaginary Batman at his side, like Jimmy Stewart and his invisible rabbit. His nasal, unobtrusive voice makes every line sound the same". [25] Historical accuracy debate [ edit ] The edition of this that I read was titled Greyhound, as a spin-off of the movie version, which I haven’t seen. I understand why Hollywood decided to change the title, as it has a better ring for a WWII naval thriller, but I really think The Good Shepherd represents the story so much better, as Krause shepherds not only his men but an entire convoy across the Atlantic. Under either title, though, this is a great read for those who love naval history and want a fictional look at a war that had been over for only a very short time when this book was written. Bradshaw, Peter (February 23, 2007). " The Good Shepherd". The Guardian. Archived from the original on 2014-10-02 . Retrieved 2009-04-06.

The acclaim that has already greeted the new Forester is an earnest of success to come. [. . .] The truth is that “The Good Shepherd’’ is so good that the tendency in a time of minor talent is to call it a great novel. This it is not. Forester starts—in his compression and use of exact detail—where most writers leave off. But he ends just short of the titans of fiction. No other character save Krause has more than one dimension. The rest are voices over intercoms, brief glimpses like star shells. It is a story of tension, not of dimension, and it was so intended. But in Forester’s chosen field, and when his talents for creating a sense of participation and of identification are in top gear, he has no master and few peers. For in war the character and personality of the leader is decisive in events much more than questions of material.” Hultgren, Arland J. (2000). The Parables of Jesus: A Commentary. Wm. B. Eerdmans. ISBN 978-0-8028-6077-4. In 1961, the Bay of Pigs invasion ends disastrously. Senior CIA officer Edward Wilson is warned there are suspicions of a mole in his department. Returning home, he finds a photograph of a man and woman in bed, and audio tapes that have been tampered with, leaving certain details unclear.

C.S. Forester’s The Good Shepherd is an excellent example of a book that knows exactly what it is trying to do, and executes it to perfection. Unlike the massively ambitious, sprawling Second World War epics by authors such as Herman Wouk, James Jones, and Vasily Grossman, Forester’s tale of a convoy crossing the Atlantic is intensely focused and self-contained. Its scope is narrowed to the vision of one man; the enormity of the war condensed into a few tense days. a b c d e f Robarge, David; Gary McCollim; Nicholas Dujmovdic; Thomas G. Coffey (January 8, 2007). " The Good Shepherd: Intelligence in Recent Public Media". Central Intelligence Agency. Archived from the original on August 15, 2007 . Retrieved 2009-06-17. We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.” ( AV)While there are a lot of torpedoes, depth charges, and gunfire, we are never certain that it is effective. There is no cathartic moment when Commander Krause charts a collision-course with a U-boat, and then blows it to smithereens. While there are probable kills, he is never quite certain, because certainty cannot be obtained on the basis of such incomplete evidence. Forester, through Commander Krause, meditates on the limits of human perception during traumatic encounters. Consecrated: this may be a reference to the rededicated altar at the Hanukkah feast; see note on Jn 10:22.

Structurally, the novel is divided into three chapters, a tiny "set the mood" thing, the actual novel, and a tiny epilog. My take? Don't bother with the opening or the ending, just read the actual novel, Chapter II. The opening just bores me, and the ending actually takes away from what has been written before it, in my opinion. The Good Shepherd (2006)". Rotten Tomatoes. Archived from the original on August 20, 2020 . Retrieved February 6, 2020. Performed no sign: this is to stress the inferior role of John the Baptist. The Transjordan topography recalls the great witness of John the Baptist to Jesus, as opposed to the hostility of the authorities in Jerusalem. None of that is to detract from the actual naval warfare scenes, which were executed in vivid color by just the right amount of detail and a thorough command of naval terminology and dialogue (not that I would know from experience, but it sounded right). Krause’s character as a leader and decision-maker shines in these parts of the story. He’s a compelling hero, a tragic figure in many ways, yet also inspiring and courageous. The bits of Scripture verses dropped in as part of his internal dialogue were a nice touch that really gave the “feel” of what kind of man he was, even though several were out of context for the situation. In a way, this book is a sort of warning of what a religious life can look like without the living power of Christ to give joy and peace. Krause is dedicated. He is devout. He is horrified by sin in himself and the thought of failure. And at the end of it all, he is terribly empty, at peace only in sleep. May that never be the picture a writer could paint of any of us.The story covers 13 watches (52 hours) aboard the ship's bridge and is told in third person entirely from Krause's point of view as he fights to save his ship, detailing his mood swings from his intense and focused excitement and awareness during combat to his resulting fatigue, depression, and self-doubt as his self-perceived inferiority and inexperience relative to the other captains under his command trouble him—although as the story progresses he is shown to be quite capable. He broods over his career and the wife who left him, partly because of his strict devotion to duty. He is troubled when the press of duty forces him to neglect his prayers (unlike most of Forester's other heroes, Krause is devout). He is troubled by recollections that the Navy review board had twice passed him over for promotion, returning a judgment of fitted and retained because there was little or no opportunity in the prewar Navy. His promotion to commander only came when the United States entered the war, leading him to fear that he may be unsuited to his command.
