I’d recommend it to everybody, but in particular if you’re looking for a diverse contemporary read, or have enjoyed the podcast Welcome to Night Vale. No." He's digging himself into a hole, and it's actually quite funny to watch. "I—oh, I don't know." Frances is a study machine with one goal. Nothing will stand in her way; not friends, not a guilty secret - not even the person she is on the inside. Then Frances meets Aled, and for the first time, she's unafraid to be herself.

As for the way Tori sees her world, I was surprised that despite everything she witnessed with Charlie she still thought that he had a great life and that he’s popular. Sometimes reading her POV felt like I missed a memo, because Charlie certainly wouldn’t have been driven to do the things he did if his life would have been as perfect as Tori thought it was. Then again that discrepancy and stark contrast of what Tori saw and what was the actual truth only emphasized the inconsistency of her perception of the world. (Uff, I never meant that review to turn out so factual and technical. Sorry! XD) BBC 100 Women 2023: Who is on the list this year?". BBC News. 23 November 2023 . Retrieved 24 November 2023. That's what I thought when I listened to my first podcast episode: it makes you want to fall asleep (in the best way possible).

I think Alice Oseman was the perfect person to write this book... she wrote it while still in University, at a school she chose because of its academic qualities, pursuing a subject she chose because it seemed like the clever thing to study. I really felt while reading it that she uniquely understood the subject and that having a someone who had been gone from high school for too much longer wouldn't have felt so authentic. I've you've read Solitaire or Radio Silence you'll know that she's one of us. Movie and book nerd, internet and 90's kid, passionate procrastinator, feminist, possibly awkward. Which is the main reason her writing is so close to my heart. It's highly relatable and highly sarcastic. No wonder I read this in a day. This was even better than her debut novel. I started reading this one with no expectations. Good or bad, I was not going to care. I just jad to read it. The book has been slowly getting its audience ever since it got published.

Watson, Averie (23 March 2022). "Heartstopper Will Be the Next Big Coming-Of-Age Show - Here's Why". CBR . Retrieved 27 March 2022. Then, Aled appears in the doorway and runs when he sees Frances. Frances chases him and eventually, they talk. Aled opens up to her and she brings him to where Carys, Raine and Daniel are. Carys and Aled have a moment together and Aled's mum walks in. She almost leaves with Aled but Frances manages to convince Aled not to go with his mum. I think this might have been the most frustrating part of Solitaire for me. Tori is bitter. She's pessimistic and judgemental. She doesn't seem to like people at all. She walks around with this "I'm better than you because I don't conform" attitude. I felt like she looked down on EVERYONE and it was exhausting. In July 2020, Oseman published Loveless, a young adult novel based on her own experiences in university. [25] Being clever was, after all, my primary source of self-esteem. I’m a very sad person, in all senses of the word, but at least I was going to get into university.” trigger warnings: parental abuse (emotional, hair cutting being the most physical), alcohol use/getting drunk, depression and suicidal implications Solitaire is Alice Oseman's debut novel, and as such the place I decided to begin with her full length works. (I have already read some of her Heartstopper webcomic, but none of her books) I had heard pretty mediocre things about this one compared to some of her others, so decided it would be a good place to start, as to gently increase my expectations and not be too disappointed. Caught between who she was and who she longs to be, Frances’ dreams come crashing down. Suffocating with guilt, she knows that she has to confront her past...
