About this deal

The former boxer eventually sought help for his issues and turned his life around in 2017. He now supports others with a recovery show online. Through his social media channels, he broadcasts The Shinny Show Live reaching out to thousands of people worldwide. We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

Fellow Salfordian Darren Cleary also chalked up a points victory on the Calzaghe undercard, beating Neil Marston 40-37 over four rounds. After all, people may look fine on the surface – which is how they present themselves online – but that doesn’t mean they aren’t suffering underneath. The 29-year-old from Pendleton hardly broke sweat as he saw off tough Welshman Mark Phillips 40-35 on points and said he felt like he had not even had a fight. Sponsored by S&P Casuals and Iron Fist, his music is being used as part of the advertising campaign for clothing brand Soul Star, and he is also modelling their autumn/winter range. Filming started last weekend in Langworthy for a new feature film by Chris Green of Strangeways Here We Come fame. Making of an Addict, 'stark and brutal', is based on the life of Salford singer, boxer and all round good guy, Shinny, and Ian Leslie went along to movie HQ at the Langworthy Cornerstone to find out more.Salford lad James Davenport – also known as Shinny – is a local star who speaks his mind. And not just because it’s World Mental Health Day, either. Just three songs have debuted at Number 1 this year (Zayn Malik’s Pillowtalk, Major Lazer, Justin Bieber and MØ’s Cold Water and Little Mix’s Shout Out To My Ex), while all other chart-toppers this year so far have taken an average of over five weeks to reach the summit from the point of entering the Top 100. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News James said: "For me, this is the best show on the planet because of what we're doing, we're touching on every subject, from bipolar to PTSD, from mental health to addiction. Shinny is only forty but has already faced the cycle of dependency as well as the financial hardships which come with it – all of which he discussed openly with us. The 37-year-old father-of-two named his band after the Hanky Park area of Pendleton, which is now known as Salford Precinct.

Fans of Manchester band Inspiral Carpets have launched a campaign to get the band to the top this Christmas in honour of the band’s late drummer Craig Gill, who died on November 22 at the age of 44. The group enjoyed success in the '90s with hits such including Draggin My Down and This Is How It Feels, but it's their 1994 song Saturn 5 that's the focus of the #XmasNo1 Facebook campaign, which has been set up by Gill’s childhood friend, Rob McCoy. Initially, SHINNy took a light-hearted approach and had used his channel to promote his charity Christmas single Christmas No.1. Soon these broadcasts gained massive popularity. A key feature amidst the promotional work and humour was SHINNy's heart-on-the-sleeve openness when discussing his demons. These conversations became an integral aspect and the shows started to reach out to sufferers of anxiety, depression and addiction. He told us how he has battled addiction, turning to drugs and alcohol following a successful boxing career. Whether they enjoy intense workouts, long afternoon walks or even just enjoying the comfort of their own home, it really doesn’t matter.Foster Senior said: "It's one down and many more to go. We are very pleased with the win and thought he was on top throughout. Another song making a surprising last minute bid for the Christmas Number 1. The One Direction singer's first solo offering might not be particularly festive, but it's certainly uplifting - especially after performing it on The X Factor final as a tribute to his late mother. When James ‘Shinny’ Davenport steps into the ring on Sunday, he will have already faced the toughest fight of his life. Through these channels, he’s breaking the stigma associated with recovery and making #RECOVERyTHENEWCOOL. The film is being written and directed by award-winning director Chris Green, who has been in the business for more than 18 years since coming runner-up in the prestigious Northern Soul new writers competition.

With Shinny, what you see is what you get. And he’s on a path to better mental health following years of difficulty. Shinny has a number of high profile fans. Tina Malone from Shameless and Happy Mondays star Bez feature in the video for the Christmas single – and he’s been on BBC Radio Manchester too. The Making of an Addict will show Shinny at his most vulnerable as he shares deeply personal aspects of his life. The film will hone in on the realities of addiction to recreate moments of desperation and paranoia.Trained by former European light-middleweight champion Jamie Moore and Bobby Rimmer, he takes on Vaclav Skromach at the Reebok Stadium on Sunday, believing he can now fulfil his potential in the ring. I’m a thinking man’s fighter now. I’ve always said – when it came to rugby, I could run with the ball and score a try, but I didn’t know the game. Now we want to help get those positive messages to our audience and help signpost people to the channels that can help.” While in recovery at Smithfield Detox Clinic in Manchester, he decided to write a song titled Christmas Number One, inspired by the times that he had ruined Christmas. He started an online group and used it to promote the single. He wants to bring more ‘real life’ to social media, in an age when so many people present a false image of themselves and seek instant gratification.
