About this deal

The modern version of Inarizushi is more decorative with colourful toppings, as you can see some of them in my photos.

Foxes ( kitsune) are said to be the messengers or spirits of Inari, and it’s believed that they enjoy aburaage. If you cook at home, you don’t need to “guess” anymore. Simply remove the oil and cook with quality ingredients and less sugar (I use unrefined sweetener as alternative for refined white sugar). The word inari means to carry rice and the word sushi ( 酸し) means rice that’s been mixed with vinegar ( su is vinegar in Japanese). Inari Sushi Filling

Garnish to go with Home-made Inari Sushi

Inarizushi is said to have originated in Kashima City, home of the Yutoku Inari Shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. The dish is named after Inari, the Shinto deity of fertility and rice. Leave your aburaage to one side and pour your soy sauce, Japanese dashi broth, miso, and sugar into the same water in the pot.

Inari sushi, known in Japanese as “inarizushi (稲荷寿司)”, is a unique sushi variant made of sweet and savory fried bean curd filled with vinegared rice (sumeshi). In Japan, it is also referred to as “Onari-san,”“Oinari,” or simply “Inari.” Make plain sushi rice as per the recipe in the post, Temakizushi (Hand Rolled Sushi), then mix roasted white sesame seed into the sushi rice. The amount of each ingredient varies and really depends on how sweet, salty and seasoned you like it. I've shared three variations below: After two minutes, remove the aburaage from the boiling water and cool them on the side. At this point, you may want to lightly press the aburaage in a tofu press to remove any excess water before you prepare your sushi rolls. To keep inari sushi refrigerated for 1-2 days, place it in an air-tight container. The Best Way To Store And Reheat SushiA: If you don’t have Miso, you can omit the secret ingredient or as one of the readers suggested in the comments below, if you have oyster sauce, you could try it too. Add only a tiny amount. Boiled shrimp and lemon: If you don’t like raw seafood, I recommend using boiled shrimp here! Garnish with lemon for added color and flavor. Turbinado sugar–Using turbinado sugar (known in Japanese as “zarame”) instead of regular sugar gives inari sushi more depth and a richer flavor. Light brown sugar can be substituted. It's sweet, slightly savory and deliciously juicy with each bite. It an essential ingredient for making Inari Sushi (Inarizushi), Soba Inari and for topping noodle soups like Kitsune Udon or Kitsune Soba. I even like to add it to miso based soups for some extra flavour and texture. Homemade vs. Store Bough Inari Age

There are different types of Inarizushi depending on the region in Japan. The shape can also be different. According to legend, at the time of Japan’s birth, there was great famine in the land. Inari arrived from Heaven on a white fox, bringing with her a grain called ine, which the people could cultivate in the country’s wetlands.Today, there are more than 32000 shrines across Japan that are dedicated to her. While this number represents more than a third of all Shinto shrines with resident priests in Japan, there are many more smaller shrines without priests spanning the length and breadth of the country. Cut in half: perfect sizes for making inarizushi and soba inari. If using as a topping for noodle soups, feel free to skip this step. Inari sushi’s storage guidelines differ depending on its components. If it’s just the skins, refrigeration provides a safe and convenient storage method. But don’t worry that this inari would not be as tasty if you cut down the sugar! My inari will still be yummy! It is best to eat inari as soon as they are made. You can keep them fresh if you store them in the refrigerator for a few hours. It is possible to make rice difficult by storing it in the refrigerator overnight. You should keep them in an air-tight container if you are going to do so. -tofu Skin: How Long Can It Be Stored? -can Inari Sushi Be Frozen?

Sugar – You’ll need sugar to balance the salty flavor from soy sauce, but feel free to adjust the amount. Ine is now the word for raw rice still in its husk (as opposed to “ gohan“, which is cooked rice). Different types of inarizushi I called it ‘Inari Sushi’ so that my readers will know that this is a sushi recipe. But in Japan, it is called ‘Inarizushi’ (いなり寿司 or 稲荷寿司), changing the sound ‘sushi’ to ‘zushi’ for easier pronunciation.

What to Serve with Inari Sushi

Because the tofu skins contain moisture, they should be used immediately in soups or stored in the refrigerator or freezer for up to two days. If you can’t get the cooked aburaage pouch, don’t worry. In the next post, I will introduce a recipe for Home-made Inari Sushi which explains how to make seasoned aburaage from scratch. How to make Inari Sushi Aburaage (油揚げ) is a Japanese deep-fried tofu pouch made of firm tofu. It is made by cutting firm tofu into thin slices and deep-frying twice in vegetable oil. They are first fried at a lower temperature of 230-250 ºF (110-120 °C), which causes the tofu to expand in size. Then they are fried again at a higher temperature of 360-400 ºF (180-200 °C), which plumps them up further and turns golden brown. Crab meat and lemon peel: It is topped with canned club meat and lemon peel. It is very tasty with a dash of soy sauce!
