About this deal

The Range Extender and main battery can be charged at the same time by connecting the Range Extender to the main battery and the charger to the Range Extender.

In this writeup - and video review - we’ll give an overview of the features, how it's changed over the MAHLE X35, and whether the changes amount to a better electric bike. No, I haven't connected any range extender nor delimiter, the battery was faulty from factory (the most likely).

SCOTT currently offers the MAHLE X20 system in five models in the Addict eRIDE lineup. Four are standard Addict eRIDE bikes and one is the Contessa Addict eRIDE 15. All feature the smaller (and lighter) 250 Wh battery, though a range extender is bundled with the Addict eRIDE Ultimate. Just a technical note: Li-Po (Li-Ion) batteries don't need to be the same type, neither the same capacity and/or age, just the same chemistry, obviously, and both close in the voltage. I have enough experience in charging Li-Po batteries in parallel (RC helicopters, 4 batteries 5S (= 21V), 4500mAh, 70C (= capable > 300A) ). It is possible to connect them in parallel safely with the auxialiary pins with resistor first (to equal the total voltage), without any other electronics (there is no short circuit in such case and max. current surge is safely limited with the resistor). When connected batteries in parallel, capacity difference is not important, neither exact internal resistance of the cells (serial cells are balanced during last period of charging, parallel cells are equall in voltage by principle, Li-Po/Li-Ion RC batteries have a service connector with each cell connected separately). That may be the reason, why the range extender and main battery are charged separately (no cell voltage service connector is available outside). As far as ride feel is concerned, MAHLE claims the X20 offers even more torque than X35, with a claimed peak of 55 Nm compared to 40 Nm from the X35. While this is lower than the biggest assist units from Shimano and Bosch, it is comparable to units from Fazua and others while being lighter.

There’s a wide range of specs for the carbon and alloy Gain, from Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 down to Claris and a few single ring options with Shimano GRX groupsets and 38mm tyres. Orbea Gain selected model specs and pricesThe X35 Range Extender is compatible with Gain F, Gain M and Gain D models from 2018 and Gain and Vibe and Optima models from 2021. The X35 Range Extender is not compatible with the eMX24 model. The HMI controller shows four colors to indicate the assist level. White for no assist, green for low assist, orange for medium assist, and then red for the highest, most aggressive assist. A yellow light indicates the lights are on or off. A blue light indicates a Bluetooth connection is being connected or disconnected. See a flashing orange light? That is a warning that functionality is limited; you can continue riding, though keep an eye out for what might be wrong through the MySmartBike app. Controlling assist doesn’t only need to happen through the HMI controller. MAHLE have also designed a set of optional e-shifters. These little shift buttons are wired, but can be placed almost anywhere. This allows riders to easily change assist levels from the handlebar. You should always keep proof of postage and we advise you to use a ‘signed for service’ when returning goods.
