About this deal

The first GoPro to introduce Hypersmooth stabilisation, this is the GoPro that really upped the game and where a GoPro vlog setup really came into consideration.

In my case, the Rode Wireless Go is basically a wireless lav system. For what I do (sports stuff), this is the best possible setup because I need something wind-proof (and this mic works well while riding along at 20MPH/30KPH), but also that I can place off to the side and still get audio even when I’m not right in front of the camera. But you do you, the whole point of the Media Mod design is that you can use any mic you want.

Our Picks: Windscreens for Smartphones, DSLR, Action Cams, and Digital Recorders

Boasting up to 5K at 60 frames per second, super slow mo 2.7K at 240 frames per second and even 4K at 120 frames per second – if you’re dealing with action or slow mo footage this is the GoPro for you. That being said though, if you want to save a bit of cash, the reduced price of the Hero 9 makes it super tempted and is still and incredible GoPro for vlogging if 5K or super slow mo in higher resolutions isn’t a game changer for you.

There are a few decent options out there but still not ideal as they were pretty clunky – but they did sow the seeds for the Media Mod. For those who want something that’s simply the best in terms of build quality, brand and performance, the Rode SmartLav+ Lavalier Microphone is a wonderful option. However, if you want to go for a budget microphone for the audio recording of your motorcycle adventures, then the Vidpro XM-L Wired Lavalier Condenser Microphone is the perfect choice. Even though the fact the Media Mod had its own set of inbuilt mics, the thing that a lot of vloggers focused in on was that the Media Mod allowed a clean and contained solution for attaching external microphones – which opened up a whole range of options. In the case of just using a plugged-in lav mic, the Squid, that worked great, and is easier than the entire Rode wireless setup. It’s probably what I’d use when I didn’t need to go very far from the GoPro (such as at a convention where I’m hand-holding the camera).Another awesome feature is the Horizon Levelling mode (borrowed from the GoPro MAX) which makes for super steady footage.

Finally, on the form factor, you’ll notice it added those two cold-shoe ports. One on the top, and one on the side. These are for mounting any standard accessories you can think of. Although the in built audio is also the best of the GoPro range – but a Hero 9 + media mod still comes in cheaper than the MAX on its own. For these scenarios, there’s no more perfect ‘Run and Gun’ setup in terms of knowing my image quality will be spot-on and also knowing the GoPro app has the efficiency behind it to get my video files in full resolution off the camera (with mic-audio on it already) and into mobile editing workflow. Sure, the entire Media Mod may be a mixed bag, but the parts I need specifically actually fit my specific needs. The parts that mostly underperform, I wouldn’t have used much anyway. Has anyone else experienced issues like this? Obviously the easiest fix would be to enable wind reduction on the GoPro audio but I'm really trying to avoid this where possible. If however you were looking forward to that built-in shotgun mic, then you’ll be disappointed. It’s just not that good, and I think in certain situations actually worse than GoPro’s reasonably good Hero 8 audio for most action scenarios. Yes, the shotgun mic was supposed to be more for non-action scenarios, but it’s an action cam after all. And it doesn’t seem to help much in either scenario. Additionally, the HDMI output seemed flaky at best in my setup. Perhaps your TV will Netflix GoPro and Chill better than mine, but the experience was mostly unusable. One of the new advantages of this is the MAX Media Mod – which allows you to have a 155 degree field of vision, similar to that of the MAX, which is perfect for talking to camera pieces and vlogging. In my case I used it both with the Light Mod, but also some microphones as I’ll show below in the next section.
