About this deal

At the time of writing this review, there are only two books in this series, which is really worrying because Red Queen feels incomplete. But we hope for them all the same,” Alice said. She looked sadly at the remains of those hopeful faces. Above all, we hope not to die in terror.”

But we hope for them all the same,” Alice said. She looked sadly at the remains of those hopeful faces. Above all, we hope not to die in terror.

There may be more to come in the Alice Series, but you will have to read it to find out if there it paves the way for a follow up. Highly recommended for adult readers who enjoy dark fairy tales, magic, and transformation through suffering. I've really become a fan of Henry and I can't wait to see where she takes this story next. If you enjoyed this tale, you may want to try The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins or The Circle by Mats Strandberg. The follow up from Alice is the Red Queen, which takes Alice out of the confines of the mental hospital and the Old City to pastures new, but this may not be as wondrous as she may have initially predicted. Alice finds herself confronted with the Red Queen and it is anyone’s guess as to whether they will be in conflict or join forces to create a spectacular twosome!

Now that we have answered all the important questions, let's get going! Mild spoilers for Alice and Red Queen to follow. The way he said it was like he was talking to a child that needed to be reminded of her manners. Elizabeth had never heard Papa talk to Mama this way before. That's what you'll have to find out after reading this book. But let's think for a moment what are happy endings for the books like this one?

Summer is flying by, and there are just five short weeks until THE GHOST TREE is released. This book is an homage to all the coming-of-age horror novels I read when I was younger – except all those books featured boys as the protagonists when I longed for more stories about girls. In this atmospheric, terrifying novel that draws strongly from “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” the author of Alice and The Girl in Red works her trademark magic, spinning an engaging and frightening new story from a classic tale. Even though everyone in the village attended church on Sunday there was a good deal of what the pastor called “folk beliefs”—and he shared some of those beliefs himself, which was unusual for a man of God, or so Katrina told me. It was something about the Hollow itself that encouraged this, some sense that there was lingering magic in the air, or that the haunts in the far woods reached their hands out for us.

Publication Order of The Chronicles of Alice Books

I also found that a lot less happens in this one than in the first book. Alice and Hatcher have left the Old City behind and are travelling east to find Jenny (another twist I didn’t like – Jenny ends up being the White Queen, with no real explanation as to how this came about). They travel and travel, through villages, desert, forest – so much trekking!! Christina also kills of Pipkin and all the girls they rescued in book 1 – like why?!? What a waste  The pieces are set and the game has already begun. Each move brings Alice closer to her destiny. But, to win, she will need to harness her newfound abilities and ally herself with someone even more powerful—the mysterious and vengeful Red Queen.
