About this deal

The Vegetarian meets Carrie meets Mean Girls in this deliciously dark tale about toxic female friendships, academia and class.”— BookRiot, “7 of the Buzziest Beach Reads of the Year” Arts & Sciences: People: Faculty: Mona Awad". College of Arts & Sciences at Syracuse University . Retrieved 2 April 2023. Arc Villain: The Lion in seems to be one in the first half thanks to the way he treats Samantha, before it’s revealed that he’s not actually a bad guy. Everytown, America: Warren is an amalgamation of several real-life New England universities, and based on Rhode Island. The Secret History meets Jennifer's Body. Brilliant, sharp, weird... I loved it and I couldn't put it down.' KRISTEN ROUPENIAN

Veitch, Mara (2021-08-02). "The Novelist Mona Awad Pushes Shakespeare off the Stage". Interview Magazine . Retrieved 2023-05-18. I observe from behind borrowed sunglasses as the women whom I must call my colleagues reunite after a summer spent apart in various trying locales such as remote tropical islands, the south of France, the Hamptons. I watch their fervent little bodies lunge for each other in something like rapture. Nails the color of natural poisons digging into each other’s forearms with the force of what I keep telling myself is feigned, surely feigned, affection. Shiny lips parting to call each other by their communal pet name. Yeah, Jonah, I remember.” The horrified faces. Heads slightly bowed. “I still think about it. I mean, it was pretty hard to forget. It was so . . .” Disappeared Dad: Samantha hasn’t seen father since she was in high school. Her mother, on the other hand… To call this a dark comedy undersells the richness of its message, and to say it’s a satire misses its realism. Bunny is so sharp it will leave you bloody.”— VultureAnother plot twist: Max is a different kind of Hybrid. Not only is he functional and has working sexual organs, he is a representation of Samantha’s inner desires and thoughts. As her psyche, he vocalises the thoughts she buried inside her. Personally, I interpreted this as Samantha having romantic feelings towards Ava; this was so painfully obvious that this book should have another genre added: sapphic. Cool Teacher: Benjamin, the faculty chair, is seen as this by Samantha. She used to see the Lion as one too, due to their shared interests, until her mental breakdown in his apartment.

It’s a novel that’s difficult to describe but easy to fall in love with. Awad has created a singular world, inspired just as much by the dark fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm as it is by the cult-classic movie “Heathers” (which Awad makes several sneaky allusions to throughout the book). With her second book, Awad has proved herself one of the most innovative and original authors out there, and “Bunny” is a wild, audacious and ultimately unforgettable novel. And lastly the book shows how hard it can be to kill your 'darlings', to say goodbye to certain people in your life, but even phases of your life (Samantha leaving student life behind her but also finds a place for her passed away mother) Her contempt towards the Bunnies isn’t specifically mentioned, but it can be garnered through their criticism of her works: angry; mean; distant; dark but like not in a good way; funny, yes, but almost too funny. It can also be sourced from how much better their lives outside of this writing program is compared to hers. The Marvelous Deer: Samantha encounters a stag in front of The Duchess' house right before going in for a meeting, and is mystified by it, seeing it as a magical, majestic moment. When she tries making a Hybrid, it turns out she accidentally uses that stag instead of the bunny provided by her group, and it becomes Max.

Whatever response I offer—an earnest confession of my own imminent failure, a bald‐faced lie that sets my face aflame—will elicit the same knowing nod, the same world‐weary smile, a delivery of platitudes about the Process being elusive, the Work being a difficult mistress. Trust, Sasha. Patience, Sarah. Sometimes you have to walk away, Serena. Sometimes, Stephanie, you have to seize the bull by the horns. This will be followed by the recounting of a similar creative crisis/breakthrough they experienced while on a now‐defunct residency in remote Greece, Brittany, Estonia. During which I will nod and dig my fingernails into my upper‐arm flesh. The weirdest novel you’ll read this year . . . in the best way possible…With hints of Heathers and MeanGirls,I read Bunny inone night and was genuinely bummed when it was over.”—Mehera Bonner, Cosmopolitan Following the blood bath, a beautiful man emerges from the chaos. Odysseus, the man, is cultured- he enjoys Fellini and Proust; he is knowledgable in Erostisme and native in French. Then he opens his mouth and screams and gets beheaded with an ax. Don’t you just wish you can do this every time you’re on a commercial flight and that darn baby won’t stop crying? But don’t you worry about Odysseus, he is just a Draft; an intertextual space; a Darling; a Hybrid. Not a boy, the Bunnies are woke – genderism is so not Workshop-like.
