Taking the individual stories of women, including those now appearing as Barbies, I explore a series of archetypal themes, revealing how heroines are produced by the hetero-sexist societies that surround them. Barbie also made new additions to its Shero program, which began in 2015. The initiative has already honored such history-making women like Ibtihaj Muhammad, Misty Copeland, Ava DuVernay, Eva Chen, and Ashley Graham. Now, it’s celebrating even more modern-day female heroes: gold-winning Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim, world-renowned chef Hélène Darroze, and others. The Barbie® Inspiring Women™ Series pays tribute to incredible heroines of their time; courageous women who took risks, changed rules and paved the way for generations of girls to dream bigger than ever before. Recognizing decades of dedication, ground-breaking research and heroic achievements as a conservationist, Barbie® honors Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace, with a collectible doll made from recycled materials. Joined by chimpanzee David Greybeard, Dr. Jane Goodall Barbie® doll wears field attire and comes equipped with a pair of binoculars and a notebook. Doll stand and Certificate of Authenticity included. Made from a minimum of 75% recycled plastic. Excludes doll head, hair and chimpanzee. Doll cannot stand alone. Colors and decorations may vary.

The doll’s look takes inspiration from an iconic photograph of Wilma, right down to the woven basket that she holds. The first Barbie was created in 1959 by Ruth Handler, an American businesswoman. Chesnot/Getty Images This Barbie® Inspiring Women™ doll honors Wilma Mankiller, a tireless advocate for social justice and the first female Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. Barbie is committed to shining a light on empowering role models in an effort to inspire more girls. As a part of The Barbie Dream Gap Project, we’re introducing girls to remarkable women’s stories to show them you can be anything. In celebration of the 5th anniversary of The Barbie Dream Gap Project, Barbie teamed up with Inspiring Girls International to host a global auction featuring replicas of one-of-a-kind dolls originally launched over the past five years. The role model dolls for auction include Shonda Rhimes, Helene Darroze, Katya Echazaretta, Hui Ruoqi and Bebe Vio.

Barbie Highlights Historical and Modern-Day Women Including Chloe Kim, Patty Jenkins and Frida Kahlo to Continue to Show Girls They Can Be AnythingAs they evolved from eclectic homemade rag, woollen and wooden figures to mass-produced commercial objects, they became important in children’s gender role play. Rehearsing for their adult years, boys played with toy soldiers, action figures and superheroes, while girls had baby dolls to tend to and model figures to dress and groom alluringly. Each “Inspiring Women” doll comes with educational information about the way each of the female heroes shaped society. The lineup consists of both historical and modern-day figures. Amelia Earhart, the first female to fly across the Atlantic Ocean and Frida Kahlo, the famous artist, and activist, is among them. Although the series has only three dolls so far, the lineup is set to grow with the release of new ones, a spokeswoman for Mattel said. Barbie dolls have also been criticised by social scientists for promoting a white, idealised body type that advanced a kind of compulsory heterosexuality and subservience. The call was for women to escape inferior lives as “sex objects” and instead to pursue “real” lives and be recognised for their achievements.
