Tia Maria is sweet, with bitter coffee and strong vanilla notes, and hints of caramel and citrus. It has more depth and tastes smoother and more refined than Kahlua, with a stronger coffee flavor. Tia Maria Matcha will be available in 700ml bottles and will be launching in major supermarkets this summer. ILLVA Saronno say "the structural cornerstone of Tia Maria is the white overproof Jamaican rum. The rum is distilled from sugarcane molasses that have been cultivated on plantations near the seaside. The fresh, salt-imbued air coming off the warm Caribbean Sea makes for a very special crop, as does the more fertile sea-washed terrain." One of the legends is about a young Spanish girl that had to flee Jamaica because of the colonial war. She was accompanied by her female servant Maria, who not only managed to bring some jewelry with them but also saved the family recipe for coffee liqueur.

Morris Cargill, a Jamaican lawyer, and businessman, states in his book Jamaica Farewellthat he had the idea of making a coffee liqueur similar to the one his aunt used to make.

What is the Tia Maria Drink?

To honor her name and to thank her for saving the recipe, the Spanish lady named the liqueur Tia Maria(Tia is the Spanish term for aunt or auntie). As a grainy powder with lots of flavour, matcha usually works best in drinks with texture, like sours made with egg white or aquafaba, or in creamy drinks that use a whole egg like flips or cream like an Alexander.

Not strong enough: Add extra brandy (by the ounce) until it is as strong as you like it. You can also add a little extra Tia Maria, but it will make the drinks sweeter and doesn't have a strong alcohol taste like brandy does. Tia Maria is relatively light in alcohol (20% ABV), pairs beautifully with anything creamy, and makes a fabulous dessert substitute or after-dinner drink. It also pairs beautifully with vodka, increasing potency without detracting from its sweet roasted coffee bean flavor.
