The Long Dream (from The Story of the Mysterious Tunnel,トンネル奇譚 Ton'neru kitan), a story about a man who claims that the length of his dreams are becoming longer and longer and about how he begins to change as his dreams extend farther and farther. Adapting Frankenstein faithfully and originally is no small ask, but Ito answered the call with grace and poise, as well as a manic adoration for the source material.Until reading this collection, Junji Ito existed as a myth. His intense, otherworldly horror stories had created this singular presence that was known even among the biggest manga newbs. The Liminal Zone is a collection that features four tales. Unlike other collections, the stories featured in this one are much longer than other books and originally appeared on the Line Comics App in Japan. There is also an author’s notes at the end of each story, explaining abit about the creative process and thought behind each of them. Also, there is some concept art sketches. I liked this further insight into how these horrifying tales came to be. Yuuji watches as Rina's doctor comes to visit her, but she screams and slams the door in his face. Yuuji half-remembers the face of the doctor who attended Yuuji's grandfather; and comes to suspect they are the same person. He debates over whether or not to tell Rina's family that his grandfather is responsible for the curse on their daughter. Hideo encourages Yuuji to keep quiet about it, but Yuuji resolves he must tell the truth. As he is about to go over to their house, he sees Rina in the garden outside, apparently recovered. She is calm and happy, and her skin looks completely normal. When I have this kind of very clear image right from the start, the story is easy to create. All I have to do is think about it inductively moving, toward the image. I used to create like that a lot. As the ideas dry up, a lot of times I'll write the story by forcing some vague image or idea to take shape. In those cases, it really is a lot of work. Lately, it's been nothing but that."
