There’s a lot of action in this book with plenty of battles as York defeats Lancaster. It is during this time that Richard’s hatred for the Lancasters grows when he learns of his beloved father’s death. Following success on the battlefield, the late Duke of York’s oldest son becomes Edward IV, who showers affection on his two younger brothers, giving them royal dukedoms and encouraging them to seek out the pleasures of women. This isn’t enough for young Richard, who remains bitter over the loss of his father. Even the interest of Anne Neville isn’t enough to take his mind off of his dark thoughts.

I’ve got quite a bit of catching up to do, but this story feels so perfect. Of course this is villainous Richard, as in Shakespeare, but he is a much more complex and nuanced character. In a way, it’s a commentary on Shakespeare’s Richard, but this character, who is intersex, also reflects the knowledge that comes from the bones of the historical Richard III, described as “gracile” or feminine in structure.
