About this deal

The Legion of the First Prince can draw on the unfathomable numbers of Be’lakor’s minions to grind their enemies down, represented by the Unyielding Legions battle trait. In the afterlife the Grimhailer still hunts, but now he does so in the name of Nagash. His quarry is no longer eldritch secrets of mortality - instead he seeks those who transgress against his master. Through his arcane powers Reikenor can sense those that withhold souls from Nagash, tamper with his necromantic rituals, desecrate his monuments or commit any other sacrilegious act. Those who are not in service to Nagash but pursue necromantic knowledge are especially targeted. [1a] Turns Deathless Spirits instead of a 5+ instead of a 6+ if within 12″ of Knight of Shrouds or Reikenor. A really solid take if you intend to bring these models anyway, as it will vastly improve survivability Deathriders The first key unit though isn’t a unit, the Procession, Emerald Host, will get a lot of work done for us through the Emerald Curse The Nighthaunt book is pretty dry on Command traits. There aren’t a few different tables for each type of commander, it’s just one with 6. They’re pretty mediocre, so many will choose to run Lady Olynder as a General due to her special ability rather than getting a command trait, we’ll discuss what that does in her unit entry but it is pretty competitive.

Be’lakor is a being of ancient evil who commands a vast host of Daemons – some coerced, some enslaved, and some that find common cause in the destruction of empires. A new allegiance option found in the book represents the Dark Master’s expansive army. All Death armies have a 6+ Feel No Pain save when wholly within 12″ of a friendly Hero. This is yours. From the Underworlds They Come Reroll all failed hit rolls for Chainrasps within 15″ of spirit torment or Chainghasts. This would be awesome if Spirit Torments and Chainghasts were just a bit better, as it stands the tax is just too high. ChainguardYou’ll have to get your hands on the book to see all of the other treats for your Kharadron Overlords. Rest assured, they offer some welcome benefits for an already-strong army (so strong, in fact, they already have an entire Metawatch article dedicated to using them ).

I’ve used the full Vanguard box including the Knight of Shrouds. This creates some issues with the choice of small heroes, for a 1000 point list I would normally prefer to use a Knight of Shrouds on Ethereal Steed and a Guardian of Souls. Instead I’ve used Reiknor to provide some mobile threat and casting with the Knight of Shrouds. Much of Reikenor's origins are mysterious, lost to time, but what is known is that he was once a learned sorcerer-king who sought to overcome death. Through the magic of Hysh - harnessing the very light of reason - Reikenor worked towards preventing all mortality. His quest for knowledge on the subject was all-consuming, and he attracted many acolytes and followers. Eventually Reikenor's attempts to unbind the workings of death drew the ire of Nagash himself. [1a] Designed to be as easy as possible to assemble for new hobbyists while being detailed enough for the hardiest veteran to appreciate, this kit assembles Reikenor the Grimhailer, mounted on his steed, the Nightmare Kyallaron. Push-fit, with no glue required, this kit is incredibly straightforward to put together and comes on pre-coloured turquoise plastic. Mortalis Terminexus –Casting Value 6. Predatory endless spell that moves 8″. After moving the model the controlling player chooses to reverse time (Heal D3 wounds for all units within 6″) or advance time (Deal D3 wounds in 6″). In Shyish the range is increased to 12. Actually decent utility and could see use.

Nighthaunt.

A niche utility unit that doesn’t see much play. They can attempt to unbind a spell as a wizard does, gaining +1 to the unbind roll for every 4 models. And that’s it. You likely won’t have enough models to get more than +1 to unbinding without paying more points than they’re really worth. While they can also eat an endless spell, it comes at the cost of the unit taking D3 mortal wounds, something you cannot afford on a unit of one wound models. You have plenty of casters, let them do the heavy lifting. Dreadscythe Harridans Also, if you don’t think Revenants are worth it at all since they’re not much better than Reapers and they don’t count as battleline, then let me know as well. Reikenor really shines in the Hero phase with his Corpse Candles ability. Sometimes, you really, really need a spell to go off – maybe there’s an enemy Hero who’s just asking to be suddenly and violently acquainted with the Purple Sun of Shyish, or perhaps you’ve got a combo in mind and you don’t want it to be unbound. Corpse Candles lets you do just that – and you can even use it to harm your enemies!

The easiest way to bring this list to 2000 points is to add Nagash, God of the Unquiet Dead. This takes the list to 1955 but you do lose the one drop Battle Regiment. Ideally you’d remove the Spirit Torment (it’s roll is replaced by Nagash) and either have 2 units of 20 Chaingasts and add some Craventhrone Guard or Hexwraiths. You could reinforce the Spirit Hosts into a unit of 6 then.Shyish Reaper –Casting Value 7. A predatory spell that moves 8″ (12″ in Shyish), the controlling player can pivot it before moving it and for every model it passes over, roll a die, if the die rolls higher than their save characteristic, deal 1 mortal wound. Like Aethervoid pendulum but with more control, which kind of goes against why you’d take that spell (To keep an opponent from using it on you). Don’t bother. Mortal Realms is a microcosm of hobby. It’s everything you need to learn, play and paint your models, drip feed over period of time you can slowly build your collections for a great price. With painting guides, battle plans, warscrolls, Warscroll battalions, lore, paints, models and so much more it’s a really fun way to experience the hobby at a great price. Value Prior to the Shyish necroquake, Reikenor often hunted the Mortal Realms on his own. Following the rise of Lady Olynder, the wraith-wizard has joined the Nighthaunts, leading processions on her behalf or following missions set by the Mortarch of Grief. So is his power greater than ever before. [1a] Wargear [ ]

So Lady Olynder is a Wizard who specialises in supporting your army, and Kurdoss Valentian is a close-combat specialist – but what about someone that could do a bit of both? Reikenor the Grimhailer is your guy (or ghost). No Subfactions – In a rather baffling decision, Nighthaunts don’t have subfactions like other books. It was a launch battletome so it’s likely they did not know at the time those would be so important. Much more diversity in artefacts here, 3 tables with 6 weapons, 6 relics and 3 lanterns which are exclusively used by Guardian of Souls. Weapons of the Damned Even before the release of the new battle tome we were seeing a small resurgence including a top 10 at LVO for the Nighthaunt. A faithful band of followers, leavened with new recruits, has kept the faction alive in the competitive scene. With a new tome, and the move to smaller hero based armies, it’s perhaps one of the best times to start Nighthaunt. As a powerful sorcerer-king he gathered many acolytes and followers to his cause, using his mastery of light magic to try and defeat mortality itself! Although Reikenor had vast knowledge and understanding of the energies of Shyish he merely attracted the malign attention of Nagash. [1] These are equipped on Guardian of Souls only. They’re pretty niche and rarely taken but you will likely bring Guardian of Souls in many lists so it’s not entirely without merit. Spectral tether –Casting Value 6. Heal a friendly Hero within 12″ for D3 wounds. You have access to a better healing spell through the Guardian of Souls, while this spell isn’t atrocious you do have better ways to heal. C+ With lots of choices for heroes I’ve used Reiknor, who is a bit expensive at 190 points, because he gives some mobility and is a wizard with combat capability. To get value from him you will need to use him in combat but with only 7 wounds and a 4+ save he can be pretty squishy even with a 6+ ward. He needs to be accompanied by the Spirit Host for their “bodyguard” ability which restricts him to an 8” move. So what does he bring? His combat skills first: Weapon This list is meant to be straightforward and adaptable. Everything is in a battle regiment to give control of priority, however there is an option to place 3 of the battle line infantry into Expert Conquerors and the remainder into a Battle Regiment. Expert Conquerors makes the infantry count as 3 models on objectives – the Chainrasp would count as 60 models. Our Preference is to go second to make your opponent come to you (keep out of line of sight if they have shooting) and hopefully get the double turn. You can also redeploy up to 3 units via Vanishing Phantasms into reserve before the start of combat and then set them up in ambush (9” from the enemy).
