About this deal

Home kitchen appliances don’t usually enter the market wafting on hype. Yet, when it comes to an ambitious new product from the young and media-savvy California-based coffee equipment manufacturer Fellow, we’ve come to expect nothing less. The hype has been especially intense in the run-up to the debut of the Ode Brew Grinder, the company’s most complex product so far, and one for which the brand has made some lofty claims regarding features and performance. To counter this, the company has added antistatic technology. It works. If you pour coffee grounds from the catch cups from the original and the new generation, you will notice significantly more static mess from the coffee grounds in the original Fellow Ode. Updated Catch Cup- The catch cup is slightly bigger, given the larger hopper capacity. It is also now easier to pour out coffee grounds. I really like the single dose grinding of the Ode. It's one of the reasons I decided to upgrade rather than buy another Breville. When a visitor was here, changing beans in the Breville was tedious. No problem with the Ode since it doesn't store any beans.

The Gen 2 burrs seem to deal well with a range of roast levels, producing a balanced flavor profile. The cups are sweet and balanced with a heavier body and medium clarity. The main reason to upgrade is the new burr set, despite other subtle improvements. If you are a light roast drinker, you can buy the new burr set separately and use them in the generation one machine – a good option if you’re happy with most aspects of the original, but would like higher-quality coffee. Similarly, the more expensive SSP burrs can also be used in either machine. And what of the noise problem? Well, that smart speed motor means the Fellow Ode runs consistently under 60 decibels throughout grinding. Better still, it also contributes to an increasing grind particle consistency.

Brew Along With Us

Note: A Version 2 of the Ode grinder is now available.

The Fellow Ode coffee grinder makes consistent grinds for beautiful cups of coffee. The main challenge is paying attention to the grind size and being prepared to try different settings than the grind size chart suggests if necessary. That’s because its recommendations may be too coarse for pour-over. However, if you’re willing to experiment a little, you will soon find your perfect setting. With the help of their unique two-stage grinding geometry, “Ode Gen 2 Brew Burrs” create a sweet, balanced, complex cup. Whether you’re a light roast drinker looking to extract more flavours from your beans, or a medium to dark roast lover seeking rich notes of chocolate and toffee, these burrs have something for everyone. SINGLE DOES LOADING Grind what you need right before you brew. Fellow chopped off the space-hogging hopper to limit your beans’ exposure to staleness-inducing oxygen. The Ode is much faster and quieter than the Breville. I haven't specifically timed the Ode, but to grind 17 grams of beans it's certainly less than 10 seconds between pressing the start button and the motor coming to a complete stop after detecting no more beans in the hopper. The Breville's timed dose took 19.4 seconds to grind the same quantity.

Larger Hopper- The updated grinder has a larger 100g hopper, compared to the original 80g hopper. This is to cater to batch brews. One thing to note is that the Ode Gen 2 burrs, although able to grind more finally, are still not designed for espresso brewing. Coffee Quality – Fellow Ode 2 Burrs vs. Original Burrs The huge grind adjustment knob is a pleasure to use, although we found ourselves wishing the Ode would go just a tad finer to provide even more flexibility in slowing down flow through the coffee bed when brewing a pour-over with very light-roasted beans. Comparing the Wilfa to the Fellow Ode Brew Gen 2, there are a lot of options to weigh up. The Uniform + is a similar price point to the Ode, but the basic silver model of the Uniform (without scales) would be a more affordable option. Both Fellow and Wilfa's offerings are visually stunning but in different ways. The sleek rounded silhouette of the Wilfa has that Scandanavian-style appeal, whereas Fellow opt for a more angular design with textured elements. As for the cup quality, we'd say that the Fellow Ode Gen 2 just pips it, by the smallest of margins. The extra research that has gone into creating Gen 2 really shines through, and what you lose in its inability to grind for espresso, you gain in clear and nuanced filter brews. That's not to say the Wilfa Uniform is bad in any way, though! For the vast majority of 'prosumer' coffee aficionados, the Wilfa Uniform really is an end-game upgrade. To assess your claim, you will be required to provide photo and/or video evidence of the damaged product. It’s pretty expensive. If you’ve got a tight budget for your coffee grinder, it will likely not fit into it.
