It's everywhere because it's cheap to make and effective. However, it is quite toxic for us. Exposures to it even in small amounts can lead to cancer, yes, cancer, and that's according to the CDC. The EPA has labeled it a Class B1 probable carcinogen and can cause acute toxicity when exposed to the skin. On the one hand, it is touted as a great green cleaner, but on the other people claim that it is harmful and deadly. Cars: ½ Tbsp. (7.5 mL) Sal Suds in 3 gallons (12 L) of water for exterior. Use All-Purpose Spray on interior surfaces and leather seats. Why are you recommending a product that has sodium lauryl sulfate as an ingredient? Isn’t SLS dangerous? Urine stains: a 1:15 dilutionof Sal Suds with 5 drops of lemon essential oil works great on urine stains and smells in the bathroom. For mattress urine stains, I sprinkle with baking soda, then spray with this mixture and wipe up. Add 1 drop Sal Suds mixed with water into the solution compartment. Because it’s biodegradable, it won’t harm landscaping. Additional Uses

Window Wash: (aka Sal Suds Lite) ½ tsp. (2.5 mL) in a quart (1 L) of water. Spray and squeegee. Follow with a spray of pure club soda, or half vinegar/half water, and squeegee.Laundry: : 1 to 1 ½ Tbsp (15 to 22 mL) for a large load in a top loading washer. Optional: For extra whitening/brightening, add ½ c. (120 mL) baking soda to wash cycle and/or 1c. (240 mL) vinegar to rinse cycle. Double these amounts for standard (non-HE) washers. Tidy as it would be, I can’t sum it all up by saying, “Soap good. Detergent bad.” That would be a gross oversimplification. There are bad soaps (not ours, of course) that are poorly made with bits of unreacted alkali floating around in them ready to saponify your very body. You become a walking bar of soap. Ouch! teaspoon (5 mL) Sal Suds in 1 gallon (4 L) of hot water. 20 drops tea tree oil (optional). Dunk mop (microfiber, preferably) and wring thoroughly. SLS is a surfactant, a surface active age nt, which means it lowers the surface tension between materials (which is a very technical way of saying it removes dirt). While I consider SLS acceptable for household cleaning, I avoid the ingredient in skincare products since SLS is harsher than any other surfactant. In fact, the “cleaning” action often associated with vinegar is simply degreasing as many surfaces contain both grease/oil and dirt or is a result of the cleaning cloth used. My Favorite Pre-Made Cleaners

Dr. Bronner’s qualifies for the rabbit and stars logo of the Coalition for Consumer information on Cosmetics (CCIC). This logo certifies that the product and its ingredients are not tested on animals. The CCIC, a coalition of animal rights organizations, requires independent audit for confirmation. Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds All Purpose Cleaner does not contain animal products. Oral Appliances & CPAPs: Removable retainers, nightguards, etc. & dentures: Wet device. Add 1-2 drops of soap to a soft toothbrush. Brush gently, then rinse. CPAP mask, tubing, and headgear: Submerge in a warm water with a small squirt. Allow to sit 30 minutes, then wash, rinse, and towel dry. Allow to air dry thoroughly before reassembling. And speaking of soap , is Sal Suds the same as castile soap or are they different? Castile soap is a wonderful product for skin and body care, but not so much for homemade cleaning products. The reason is that soaps and detergents (Sal Suds) behave differently in water. So I don’t use too much, I keep a bottle of diluted Sal Suds by my sink: ½ c. (120 mL) of Sal Suds in a quart (1 L) of water. A small squirt in a pot or a larger squirt for a sink.

Still don’t want to use Sal Suds? That is your right + choice, and I support it! I just want to give you the necessary information to make an informed decision. On a side noteFoaming Hand Soap: Liquid castile soap diluted in water makes a great foaming hand soap that costs pennies per bottle. Here’s how I make it.
