About this deal

To shift focus of the game, you can switch the Discuss part of Step 4 "Discuss & Vote". In that case, start voting immediately after each player has played two cards.

Example: Jane is the Conspirator. There is nothing on her notebook. She tries to analyze the two previous cards and looks for something that could fit in. There is water on both cards - maybe the word is "water "? She chooses a card with a big blue wave. Once all players have explained why they played the cards they did, all players, starting with the player to the left of the active player vote on who they feel is the Conspirator. Once all players, except for the active player have voted, the Conspirator reveals themselves and points are awarded based on votes. The active player and Conspirator receive points if the Conspirator receives fewer than two votes. All Detectives who correctly voted for the Conspirator will get points, and those who voted for the wrong person get zero. After all players have been the active player once, the game ends and the person with the most points wins. Being the Conspirator This is a step by step guide for how to play Detective Club the popular submit and judge deduction party game. Additional notions and special rules can be found below the list. These will be referenced for your convenience. Note: Over the course of the game, whenever a player plays an Evidence Card, he immediately draws a new card to replace it. Each player must always have 6 Evidence Cards in hand. If it is a topic that has not yet been covered, you can most likely find more information here on your topic of choice. From official Detective Club useful links to very unofficial ones.

While the Active Player plays cards on the middle of the table, all other players play their cards in front of them. After all players have played two cards, the Active Player says the word that he has written. He then explains the reasons why he chose the two cards that he placed to reflect that word. Each player takes the Player Marker of his choice and places a Voting Token of the matching color on it.

Topics can be very specific (for instance Space Opera , USA", "Protagonists"..). or general ("Movies", "Countries", "Literature" ) depending on the level of difficulty you want to play with. The Active Player writes the word on each notebook except one. Then, he shuffles all notebooks and randomly gives one notebook to each other player. If the Conspirator is sitting directly to the left of the active player, it’s therefore first to act. They will have a very short period of time to choose their first card. When the word is finally revealed, they will also have a very short period of time to come up with an explanation for why the cards they played match the chosen word. This aspect can let the game down slightly. It can lead to the Conspirator being discovered fairly easily. That said, if you can pull it off as the Conspirator in that position, it does give you a feeling of satisfaction

Then the active player will play one of their cards to the center of the table that they believe relates to their chosen word. Every player will go around the table doing the same. Everyone plays a second card and then the active player will announce out loud what the word was. Of course, that is old news to almost everyone. You’ll get a notebook with the chosen word in it… or not.

Players keep their VP Tokens face down. Once the Scoring Phase is complete, a new round begins: the Active Player passes his marker to the player that sits on his left. Starting with the active player (“informant”) players play one card at a time that corresponds with that clue. If they do not have any good cards, they need to just do your best. If you are the one who doesn’t know the clue, you just need to do your best with what you see. This process goes around the circle twice so everyone will have played a total of two cards. Place them above the “I” and “II” symbols on your board respectively. Each round, the person who is the Conspirator, and does not know what the chosen word is, will have the toughest time. The player must look at the initial card played by the active player and try to work out what part of the card would illustrate the word. The Conspirator will be able to look at the cards being played by the Detectives, who do also know the word, and will be searching for common themes in the cards, to help determine what the word could be. The fun of Detective Club comes from the explanation step of the round. It’s where you, as a person who knew the word but had terrible cards to go with it, have to really sell your friends on why you played their card with a hot air balloon on it when the word was “boat”. (Obviously, the answer was the balloon is someone like a parachute and you can parasail behind a boat.) Player’s vote on who they believe is the conspirator. Example: Mike and Bill have now added a second card, and Jane understands that the word was probably not water. Maybe "nature " then? Or something similar? She places the sunflower card, hoping for the best.
