About this deal

On Wednesday, we hostedan open conversation on student safety within Tommy’s Lounge. This wasan opportunity to have an honest discussion about safety on campus and within our venues and the action you wanted to see taken. Thank you to everyone who came down and got involved - following the conversation we'll be looking to build a working group, including students, to progress the initiatives discussed. If you think you or someone you’re with has been spiked, tell a bar manager, bouncer or member of staff and report it to the Police I just wanted to say a huge thank you to yourself and the company for the fantastic coasters; they have arrived with me today and they are just amazing! They are everything I wanted, and I cannot wait to display them at our event on Friday!" Drink spiking is when someone puts drugs or alcohol into a person’s drink without their consent. It can include putting alcohol into a non-alcoholic drink, adding extra alcohol to an alcoholic drink or slipping prescription or illegal drugs into an alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink. It can be difficult to tell whether a drink has been spiked, as substances used for spiking usually have no taste, odour or colour. Needle spiking is when someone injects a victim with a substance using a hypodermic needle (or other form of administration such as a combi-pen). The Local Government Association, which represents councils across England and Wales, and the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners are urging young people to learn about the dangers of spiking and take precautions to stay safe, ahead of the new university term.

After being drugged while out one night, Boston attorney Michael Abramson went on to develop DrinkSavvy drinkware that continuously monitors beverages for date rape drugs. The company also developed straws that could detect GHB, ketamine and roofies. Alcohol is most commonly used to spike drinks, either by adding some to a non-alcoholic drink or adding double instead of single measures. Ensure all reports of spiking are acted upon and that all incidents of alleged spiking are recorded and reported to the police. It is also helpful to the police if staff: We have received excellent service from Express Corporate time after time. Fast delivery of good quality products. Can't be beaten on price! Thank You!!" Tunbridge Wells adopted a proportionate response to the allegations of spiking. The council took the reports of spiking extremely seriously and worked closely with the management of the venue to ensure that improvements were made, whilst also recognising that the venue is generally very well run, that there have been no issues with the venue previously, and that the venue was proactive and willing to work with the council and police to ensure safety of its customers.Even if you leave your glass on a table with a bunch of friends, the chances are they're not going to be paying super close attention. It's much safer to finish up your drink before going anywhere. Review searching procedures and amend as necessary, as well as reviewing how often toilets are inspected, as victims of spiking have been found in there. Premises should also review the functionality of any CCTV and ensure it is not obscured. Spike Aware UK is a registered charity made up of people who have either been victims of spiking or had their lives impacted in some way by spiking. Drugs used to spike drinks are often called 'date rape drugs' but aren't always used for sexual assault. Drugs used to spike drinks

Earlier this year a Home Affairs Committee Inquiry into spiking proposed several recommendations to bring improvements to the way spiking incidents are reported and investigated, one of which was to make spiking a separate offence, something which we wholeheartedly support. If you do happen to leave your drink unattended or let it slip out of your sight for a moment, keep your eyes peeled for any suspicious changes. The coasters can be stored in a wallet or purse, and do not interact directly with a drink, which means the product did not require U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approval. Support your staff: Make clear the routes for reporting unacceptable behaviour while at work and supporting cultural change.

We are so pleased with our blankets – thank you so much for rushing these through, in time for our event! I received our goody bag and Express Corporate teddy too! Thank you so much! Fab service!" The ‘Ask for Angela’ initiative is an example of a scheme that is widely promoted by councils and used within the night-time economy. This initiative advises customers via posters in venue toilets that, if they ‘Ask for Angela’ at the bar, staff will be alerted to the fact that the person feels unsafe or threatened. Staff will know that the individual needs support to leave their situation, and can call them a taxi, escort them to their car or by call the police, for example.

In every college town in America, and really anywhere there’s a bar, such as a club or party, encountering date rape drugs in any drink is a possibility. Communicate: Create positive, public/staff-facing communications campaign, both online and in your space(s). Training – recording: Ensure staff training on information sharing and appropriate recording of details.

Ask for Angela’ - this initiative advises customers through posters in venue toilets that, if they ‘ask for Angela’ at the bar, staff will be alerted to the fact that the person feels unsafe or threatened. Staff will know that the individual needs support to leave their situation, and can call them a taxi, escort them to their car or call the police, for example. Design for Safety: Audit your spaces and adapt them to promote a safer environment and reduce risk of crime and sexual misconduct. Bristol has also launched a drink spiking campaign in partnership with Avon and Somerset Police, licensed premises and the BID. The campaign aims to improve reporting, increase prosecutions, create a consistent response across licensed premises and ensure that victims of spiking are looked after and taken seriously. The team has developed posters and other assets that venues can display in their venues to raise awareness. Crucially, these assets are designed to ‘fit in’ with the surroundings in a licensed premises to increase the likelihood of them being used. The campaign has had some early successes. The materials are in 155 venues across the city, the police force has allocated a dedicated resource for forensics testing as well as developing a clear process on how to deal with reports, and the campaign has successfully raised broader awareness of spiking amongst the public. Moreover, there was an arrest for spiking within the first four days of the campaign launching. To further support the campaign, the team has produced a drink spiking process guide for venues. This provides guidance on what spiking is and things to look out for, as well as signposting to support services. The council places a clear emphasis on working collaboratively with venues to improve practices where there are allegations of spiking, rather than revoking or suspending licences. The council has also provided drink testing kits and urine testing kits to licensed premises following a successful bid to the Government’s Safer Streets Fund. This will enable officers to test drinks on the spot to prevent spiking and help them to collect early evidence for investigations. Many licensed premises work incredibly hard to ensure that their customers can enjoy a night out safely and deter perpetrators. To support licensed premises, several industry associations produced a factsheet which includes recommendations and some resources for the hospitality sector on how to respond to and prevent spiking. The LGA would recommend that licensed premises: It depends on what you're drinking as to how easy this is, but if you can, always opt for a bottle rather than a glass. You can easily keep your thumb over the top to stop someone from slipping something in. If you are drinking from a glass, you can hold it from the top rather than the side.In an ideal world society would condition and teach its members, not to spike, and respect bodily agency and authority- and this is something we can all look towards. However, the supplying of Spikeys to bar’s customers is a good first step in terms of prevention. We were really pleased with the speedy delivery and quality of our mint tins! Thanks again for all your help!" can provide as detailed a description of the suspected perpetrator as possible, if known, including clothing I have a real problem with the ‘date’ rape drug, because there’s no date. GHB is a weapon,” Januszczak told a meeting of National Organization for Women in Palm Beach County, Fla., in 2010. Victims should never feel ashamed or that it is their fault, and it is vital the police are aware so that perpetrators can be identified and brought to justice, and we can prevent others from falling victim to this heinous crime.” Case studies
