About this deal

As a rough guide, newspaper is usually 35-55gsm, standard copier paper is 80-90gsm and business cards are around 300gsm. gsm is an unusual grammage for folded leaflets, but is popular for large-sized prints due to its stability. Notebook paper is generally between 80-90gsm (grams per square metre) making it adequate for taking notes or for creating booklets etc. Higher quality writing paper is generally 90gsm and above. Magazines normally use light gloss paper which has a weight of around 70-130gsm for the main body of the magazine, and a weight 0f 170-250 gsm for the cover. What kind of paper is used for photos?

For sure, you have often heard people saying that the higher the GSM, the better. However, let us tell you that this is NOT necessarily true. GSM is not used to measure quality. It is only used to measure paper weight and nothing more. Most affordable watercolor paper pads are available around 200 gsm weight, obviously getting more expensive as you increase the weight. Watercolor paper is also measured in lbs or pounds per ream. The lbs of the paper is usually displayed alongside gsm. This is done by measuring a ream of 500 sheets (22” by 30”) of paper in pounds (lbs). International paper weight is determined by taking the weight in grams of exactlyone square meter of paper and stating how much it weighs.Weighing paper in grams per square meter (GSM) literally gives you the weight in grams ofjust one single square meter of paper.I have a cannon pixma TS5320 – i’ve read every compatible paper weight but i am still confused on the weight limit the rear tray can handle.

Different paper weights are referred to in gsm which stands for grams per square metre. If you were to take a sheet of paper that was one metre by one metre and weigh it, the weight of that sheet of paper is its gsm value. There is also the Canon PIXMA IP8750 that can print up to 300gsm, including most of the same features as the IX6850 but with a 6 ink system which adds Grey ink, and the inclusion of a CD/DVD printing tray.

I have done SO much research on wedding stationary and paper but i think im at the point where my brain will not understand/ convert wedding stationary unit (lb or 10pt) versus gsm vs gm/2. Weight is determined by GSM – grams per square meter. This is the weight in grams of the piece of paper if you took a sample of it as a 1 x 1 meter sheet. Here I tried to use the least amount of water I could get away with to apply a wash of watercolor paint onto the printing paper. This range of papers can be used for mixed media projects involving heavy inking, watercolours, paints, etc.

As a unit of measure, GSM connects the wood pulp producers (who sell by weight) with the paper mills (who work on area). Generally, the higher the GSM the more wood pulp is required to produce the paper. For example, one square metre of 400gsm board will use much more wood pulp than a square metre of 100gsm paper. Using the recommended paper weight has a good impact on a printer and quality of the final print job. The effects of not doing so range from bad quality prints to printer damage. High on the list of issues is “paper jam”, which then evolves into multiple other issues with varying error codes and messages on your printer. Below are some examples of the maximum GSM recommended for the most common printing scenarios. If you are setting a fold in colour, we recommend scoring from a grammage of 170 gsm onwards so that the colour does not split at the fold. Book paper ranges from 60-130 gsm, slightly lower than copy paper. Children’s books tend to be closer to 120gsm and above as they need to be more durable.

Take note, though, that the GSM you should choose will highly depend on your application while the paper’s finish will greatly affect the design. Again, there are paper weights that are more suitable for photocopying or office printing. You should not use the same GSM for printing marketing materials like booklets and posters if you want to achieve the best quality. What I’d like to be able to do is bulk buy printed leaflets (with my details and pricing info etc.) from an online printer such as vistaprint. This would cut down on the costs and my effort in generating these. However, I’d like to leave a space on these leaflets where the QR codes and login details can be printed by myself as and when they are needed for different events. Although if you make heavy washes you may still need to stretch your paper and mask it down. 140lb of paper doesn’t really need stretching, but some masking tape will suffice. Anything less, requires stretching. As always I hope you are better equipped with the knowledge to know what gsm paper is best for watercolor painting. You are now armed with some vital information when choosing the right watercolor paper for your painting needs. Look at all the blotching. Watercolor paper is treated in a process called sizing. This let’s the paper avoid any blotchy effects like in the photo above. So to preserve those lines when you have a finished piece, use a light pad to transfer the lines to good quality watercolor paper, and then paint over. Is 200 gsm Paper Good for Watercolor? and the weights continue to go up, please see table above with additional comparison by using grammage)
