About this deal

This lovely little Wainwright route up Silver How is very convenient for Grasmere. You start in the centre of the village and pass through the grounds of Allan Bank (once home to William Wordsworth and now a National Trust property). The paths are easy to follow, and the only really steep section is towards the top, after which you’ll be presented with views towards the famous Langdale Pikes. The route down is mostly steps, which makes things a little easier on your knees! In 2010, Eric Robson presented a BBC Radio 4 documentary called "The Man behind the Mountains" (16 October 2010). [18] When visitors come to the Lake District, they’ll often base their itinerary on Wainwright’s well-documented walking routes and will try and bag as many fell walks as the time (and their legs!), will allow.

The Far Eastern Fells the eighth and final volume of my Lakeland Fellranger series was published in 2013 In terms of a walking route for Little Mell Fell, you can go straight up and down, or make a little circular walk of it via various paths from the summit. You can also do this walk alongside Great Mell Fell and Gowbarrow Fell. All three fells are within walking distance if you wanted to loop them together. Wainwright on Little Mell Fell

DON'T MISS

The paths are easy to follow and the view from the top opens up with Ullswater below you and the stupendous fells of Martindale behind. It’s certain to inspire you onwards with your Wainwright Bagging journey! The second series, broadcast in 2007, included Catbells, Crinkle Crags, Helm Crag, Helvellyn from Patterdale, High Street from Mardale and Pillar. A six-part series entitled Wainwright Walks: Coast to Coast was broadcast on BBC Four in April and May 2009 and on BBC2 from 21 July 2009, [16] [17] and presented by Julia Bradbury. Great Mell Fell is one of the smallest of the 214 Wainwright fells in the Lake District. It is an outlier in many respects, along with its twin Little Mell Fell. In fact, if Great Mell Fell wasn’t included in Wainwright’s guide to the Lakeland Fells, it may not be climbed so often at all. You can climb this small fell, only 469m, from either Great Langdale or Little Langdale. Either way you are greeted by ‘The Great Wall of Lingmoor’ at the summit, as well as a glimpse of the surrounding fells, which as always make for good viewing. There are 214 Wainwrights in total, but there are many different routes up and down, each of which offer a different aspect, view and of course level of difficulty.

Hopefully, now you have a good understanding of the Wainwrights, their history and whether you’ve got the determination and fitness to climb them or not. It’s a magical feeling to even conquer just one of the beautiful fells; your journey will certainly inspire you and make you even more keen to climb the others. Please feel free to leave a comment below of what your favourite Wainwrights are! The Wainwright Bridge". The Wainwright Society. 10 April 2008. Archived from the original on 12 June 2008 . When I first started winter fell walking with Dan and his family, we went up Fairfield,” says Karen. “It was actually the first time I had ever been out and about in the winter. I almost didn't know that you were allowed to go up proper mountains at that time of year. It was just very memorable for that! There was snow everywhere, and I think that changed my view of walking in the mountains.” High Street, so-called for the Roman Road that once traversed the summit, is a popular choice among walkers. It’s long, flat and great for a brisk march, unencumbered by obstacles. Alfred Wainwright: Grumpy, reclusive and eccentric". The Independent. 2 July 2005. Retrieved 19 June 2021.Research from the University of Cambridge has revealed that walking at least 20 minutes a day has many proven health benefits and should be an important part of our daily life.

In 1972 Wainwright devised the west–east Coast to Coast Walk, as an alternative to the north–south Pennine Way. The Coast to Coast, he declares in his guidebook, which follows the same format as the Pennine Way Companion, "puts the Pennine Way to shame" for scenic beauty, variety and interest. [14] The 190-mile (310-kilometre) route traverses the north of England from St. Bees to Robin Hood's Bay, passing through the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors national parks. Behind the Scenes with Wainwright: A Publisher's Perspective of a Reluctant Celebrity by Andrew Nichol (2012) Wainwrights and Wainwright Outlying Fells". HillBaggingUK. 2018. The Wainwrights: The Wainwrights are a list of hills appearing in the seven volumes of Alfred Wainwright's Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells; the list is subjective - some of the hills are not summits at all - just prominent points at the end of a ridge or spur from a higher mountain.

It’s possible to avoid some of the scramblings on the Hall’s Fell route, and the views across The Dodds towards Helvellyn from the summit are reward enough to keep you motivated.
