About this deal

The first way you can use solvents with Polychromos is with the aid of paper stumps. You can dip the stump straight into a solvent and apply it to the paper to help blend the marks easily. However, these will be subject to wear and tear. You can also use cotton buds for large areas but stumps are recommended for getting those detailed shading marks. As well as stumps you can also use brushes to get a different paint like effect- perfect while sketching outdoors. Pencil strokes can be in the form of circulism, which is achieved by creating very small overlapping circles, this method is perfect for portraits and skin tones. Faber-Castell’s collection of colored pencils coincides with our passion to support your creativity at every age and skill level. That is why we created our Polychromos ® Artist’s Color Pencils and Goldfaber Color Pencils in our Art & Graphic and Creative Studio lines. Every colored pencil of ours is manufactured for exceptional performance with high-quality pigments and SV bonding but hold their own unique build and qualities.

For detailed artist drawings, we recommend using a smooth paper, such as Bristol board, Strathmore toned pads, Hot Press Watercolour Paper or textured Pastelmat. There are some minor complaints with the smaller sets of there not being a good representation of the entire color wheel, however. But with the available blending, you still have plenty of flexibility even in the smaller sets. Finding the best colouring pencils, the ones that feel just right in your hand, ultimately boils down to personal choice. But that’s not to say we can’t nudge you in the right direction with our guide to the leading brands for artists. What makes Polychromos so special? The answer is found in the development. Made from premium cedar wood, Polychromos is comprised of vegetable oil, wax, and high-quality pigments. These qualities give the color pencil a buttery smooth color laydown and can be easily blended for layered effects, highlights, and transitions. With a 3.8 mm break-resistant lead, this pencil is also water resistant and smudge proof. The Polychromos pencil is labeled by color name, color number, lightfastness rating, and an SV bonded label, with the lead color painted on the entire barrel of the pencil. If you are brand new to art and don't feel comfortable creating your line drawing, feel free to use a ruler to get an exact placement for the elements in this piece.

Colours: Of course, the range of colours in a set of pencils is an important consideration. However, you don’t want to go overboard if it’s your first set – start with 24 or fewer and work your way up. You can often buy individual pencils from the leading brands to add further range to a small set. There is not a requirement on when or reasons to burnish colored pencil artwork. It comes down to a style choice. If you like a more saturated, polished look to your finished piece then you may choose to burnish. Finding a pencil that suits your particular style should be at the forefront of your buying decision. The hand of each artist moves in a slightly different way, producing their own distinctive works. Pencils vary enormously too, in the hardness of the lead, how they feel in the hand and in the variety and depth of pigment. Matching your style to that of the pencils is key. Pencils - For this project I used these colors: a violet, dark indigo, alizarin crimson, orange, yellow, may green, white, ivory, and caput mortuum. Blending will be greatly assisted with the help of a thinner, however, so this needs to be considered before going to work with these. That being said, you can still blend successfully without the assistance of paint thinner if necessary. But to open the core material up, just a small dab of some sort of solvent seems to release things. These cherries have a very glossy type of skin I wanted to use the burnishing technique to be able to show this texture. Faber Castell Polychromos Pencils are a unique tool in the world of sketching. They are oil based as opposed to being wax based like other pencils, allowing them to blend with solvents, like turpentine or white spirit in a similar way to how you would blend oil paints. For whiskers, try carefully removing a line of colour with craft knife or plan ahead and indent the paper with an embossing tool prior to adding colour. You can also use a Tombow Mono eraser for more subtle highlights. Color-wise there isn’t much that can beat these. The color is mostly true-to-form and what you see on the outside of the pencil is what you get. Depending on the application, you can get deep colors with fantastic intensity. Blending is quite good although, being an oil-based pencil, the assistance of turpentine/thinner is encouraged by not required. Polychromos means “many colors” and this name is quite accurate as you can go from singles up to the 120-piece behemoth set. Burnishing, as a word, technically means to polish by rubbing. The word actually comes from a word that means, “to brown”. In colored pencil art, you can create the appearance of glossy or shiny objects by using this technique.
