About this deal

In The Buff is all about naturism and naturists, what naturism is will always be a great area for discussion, whether people believe it is simply being nude in your own home or whether it is the freedom to go bare the world over, what is agreed is that while naturists do have sex, naturism itself is related to non-sexual nudity. From 1992 to 2001, X-plicit Players held an annual "Parade" in Berkeley, "celebrating the beauty of the body, and the beauty of the liberation of the body from boring fashion and repressive social standards". It was promoted by word-of-mouth, street posters, newspaper and internet listings, but in later years we put together a

Andrew and Carol's marriage is strained by the demands of her fame, made worse by Mary's inappropriate mention that Andrew and Sarah had been engaged a decade earlier. Roger and Mary are recovering from a devastating personal tragedy, made more difficult by Mary ringing home every few minutes and by Brian suddenly talking at length about using their twins in one of their commercials, which leads to the revelation (to Brian, and the audience) that one of the toddler twins died nine months earlier. Lonely Maggie is determined to persuade Peter they should be more than just friends, and Sarah is not as happy with her life as she appears.

Peter's friends are Andrew, now a writer in Hollywood; married jingle writers Roger and Mary; glamorous costume designer Sarah; and eccentric Maggie, who works in publishing. Joining them are Carol, Andrew's American TV star wife; and impolite Brian, Sarah's very recently acquired, and still married, lover. Vera, and the now grown Paul, are still at the estate, though Vera has given their notice, intending to leave immediately after the weekend, as Peter plans to sell the house after this last party. Peter's Friends is a 1992 British comedy film directed and produced by Kenneth Branagh, and written by Rita Rudner and Martin Bergman. In the summer of 1992 we became friends with Andrew Martinez, a young UC Berkeley student who became known as "The Naked Guy" for attending classes nude. After a number of adventures, arrests, and expulsion from UC, he worked on a document he called The Militant Nudist Manifesto. Before he left Berkeley he entrusted that document to Deb. Male circumcision is one of the oldest known surgical procedures. It has been widely practiced as a religious rite since ancient times. An essential initiatory rite of Judaism and the Coptic branch of the Christian Church, male circumcision is also an obligation for Muslims, signifying cleanliness and purification. It has been, and often still is, a traditional practice of societies around the globe. Out-of-the-blue we received an invitation from Dave Nadel to perform in his club, Ashkenaz. He wanted to host a benefit for the legal fees in our attempt to overturn the recently-passed Berkeley anti-nudity ordinance. Ashkenaz is a big venue, so, we thought, why not come up with some ambitious new material?

If the circumstances are appropriate and it’s a warm day, I might not be wearing any clothes around the house,” he said. “I’m certainly very unhappy if I go somewhere where the sun is shining and I’m not able to get undressed.” Welch was first drawn to naturism at the age of 14, when he came across a nudist beach on a family holiday to France. “I’ll admit that it may have been testosterone fuelled, because there were girls who weren’t much older than me sitting on the beach with no clothes on. But rather than run away or be offended, I wanted to be on that beach,” he said. A few years later on a separate holiday, he took his first trip to a naturist beach. He says it felt like “completely the right thing to do.” We perform in venues, streets and parks around the US and Canada. We deal intimately and palpably with Body in many forms, beginning with our own flesh bodies, and the bodies of our willing audience members. We cultivate alternative functions of touch, alternative experiences of Body. We use language, voices, instruments of sound and music, paintings, and videos to reach and move our audiences and each other. We fight to stay naked and free on the streets and in the parks of our town, experiencing Body in the social realm; experiencing the social body of Berkeley. Our performance is both a forum where we share the results of our Body studies, and a laboratory where we advance them together. Ten years later, Peter has recently inherited the family estate, and invites his friends up for the 1992-1993 New Year's weekend.

Roger Ebert, film critic of the Chicago Sun-Times, described the film as "more or less predictable", but awarded it three-and-a-half stars, stating, "The structure of Peter's Friends is not blazingly original - The Big Chill comes instantly to mind - but a movie like this succeeds in its particulars. If the dialogue is witty, if the characters are convincingly funny or sad, if there is the right bittersweet nostalgia and the sense that someone is likely to burst into ' Those Were the Days,' then it doesn't matter that we've seen the formula before. This is a new weekend with new friends." [8] Attended by a diverse mix of nudists, freedom-lovers, wild-men, and innocent bystanders, the Parade includes a series of rituals celebrating the beauty of the body and its liberation. Groups of people move "as one" through city streets, amongst police, street people, merchants, students and tourists who watch and join into an experience of "radical friendliness".
