About this deal

If you’re missing refit already, or feeling guilty because you weren’t around to help much, please come to one of our in-season maintenance days!

Each week the newsletter includes a wide range of news from the boat and from the charity, including details of voyages available for young people; adult voyages; opportunities for adult volunteers both ashore and afloat, and much more. We find that while some people read the bulletin almost every week, many others dip in and out, and read it when it’s convenient – which is why some items are repeated. New items are marked with an asterisk * so that if you did read it last week, you can see which sections you can safely skip.

Our charitable work

Ocean Youth Trust South is an adventure sail training charity which takes young people aged 11-25 to sea in our 30-metre vessel Prolific. Occasionally it is also possible to include 11-year-olds. We’re happy to take smaller groups (e.g. three or four people) on individual voyages to mix with others; but many clients will want to book the whole boat exclusively for their own group (twelve to fifteen people, including any adult leaders who come with the group). Dates available for whole-boat bookings: We work with around 450 young people each year, taking them to sea as active crew members in a purpose-built sail training vessel. We have come to be recognised as one of the leaders in the field of sail training, and in recent years our vessel has almost always been filled to capacity – and with a waiting list for sailing volunteers. On Monday we started a new voyage, with Harris Merton school from south London. Diggory says everyone is having an amazing time!

Diggory says: “Having had a really enjoyable season, seeing the great works of OYT South, it is unfortunate that, for personal reasons, I will have to relinquish the helm as Staff Skipper, but I look forward to continued involvement as relief skipper and supporter. Looking forward to sailing with you all in the future.” A voyage with OYT South really can transform a young person’s life – and it can have an impact in so many different ways. This video tells JP’s story:

We have two adult voyages before the closing date – five days or a weekend in September – if someone wants to come and find out more about us before applying. We can offer funded places to genuine skipper candidates if needed.

We can use both skilled and unskilled volunteers, and it all helps to keep the boat in good condition and to try and avoid losing any time on voyages next season to maintenance issues. Our Chief Executive, Mark Todd, was the inaugural winner of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency’s Award for Command Commitment to Sail Training, the highest professional recognition available in sail training. We don’t usually sail all day, every day – voyages include time ashore, a chance to explore a new place, have a shower, play games, have a beach BBQ or buy souvenirs. Can any of our other supporters do anything similar, with a school, club, or employer which regularly does charitable fundraising?

Please do think about whether you know anyone who deserves to be nominated, and spread the word as widely as possible. She has the potential for up to 26 berths but, fitting in with coding requirements, we tend to sail with 12-15 young people (and group leaders where appropriate) plus 6 or 7 adult staff and volunteers. Ocean Youth Trust South is a registered charity (no. 1079959) which offers residential sailing opportunities to young people aged 11-25 on board our 30-metre sailing vessel, Prolific. Please note that a Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award is not something you can simply pay for. Very occasionally we have had young people on board who believe that “I have paid for the voyage, therefore you have to sign my residential”. OYT South reserves the right not to complete the Record Book for a crew member who does not put in a certain amount of energy, enthusiasm, commitment and co-operation. Any young person who is in danger of falling into this category should receive a debrief midway through the voyage while there is still time to turn things round. Keen Duke of Edinburgh Award participants have nothing to fear – we simply don’t wish to devalue your achievement by signing off people who haven’t put in anything like as much effort as most participants normally do!This message was received in 2016 from a man in his fifties about a voyage he did with us as a teenager in 1979: On 10 th June we had a maintenance day – big thanks to Diggory, Josh, Lauren, Sara, Sam Gray, Rob Jelley, Martin Bayfield and Julian Ware. They did lots of work on the mizzen mast and capping rail, plus some painting and lots of other odd jobs to keep the boat in good condition and running smoothly. Big thanks to sea staff Andy Brown, Lauren, Josh, Glyn Collins, Nige Bush, Rob Jelley and Hannah Blyton. Super day out, thank you! Lovely to meet everyone and learn about what you do! Really inspiring and some fantastic stories to share. Looking forward to staying in touch in the future.”
