Brown, David. Tchaikovsky: The Final Years, 1885-1893. Until I read this picture book, I was unaware of Ellington's jazzy musical adaptation of Tchaikovsky score. If you are as ignorant as I was, prepare for a treat. While the text of this book takes you through the creative process of Ellington and his collaborators, the real fun lies in listening to the accompanying CD. All ages for the music, ages 4 and up for the book.

Maria Tallchief". Tchaikovsky hoped that the children would play the instruments on the stage, but they had difficulty keeping together with the orchestra. Because of the difficulty the children had, Tchaikovsky made the decision that they could play freely. He did not ask them to keep with the written music. After the first night, Tchaikovsky sent his thanks and baskets of sweets to the children of the Imperial Ballet School. I'm not a fan of Where the Wild Things Are, and I wasn't too impressed with Sendak's weird Labyrinth-like tale, Outside Over There (because there was no Jareth in it, obviously). But I wanted to read this version because Auntie J said it was the best version ever.

One critic complained that the ballet was in bad taste because characters in Act 2 looked like food from a pastry shop. Another complained that Ivanov's "Waltz of the Snowflakes" was taken from ballets by Petipa. [15] Tchaikovsky however thought that the staging was very beautiful, so much so that his eyes grew tired looking at it. [16]

Ormandy, Reiner and Fiedler never recorded a complete version of the ballet; however, Kunzel's album of excerpts runs 73 minutes, containing more than two-thirds of the music. Conductor Neeme Järvi has recorded act 2 of the ballet complete, along with excerpts from Swan Lake. The music is played by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. [76] In honor of the young heroine, a celebration of sweets from around the world is produced: chocolate from Spain, coffee from Arabia, [28] [29] tea from China, [30] and candy canes from Russia [31] all dance for their amusement; Marzipan shepherdesses perform on their flutes; [32] Mother Ginger has her children, the Polichinelles, emerge from under her enormous hoop skirt to dance; a string of beautiful flowers perform a waltz. [33] [34] To conclude the night, the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier perform a dance. [35] [36]
