As temperatures rise, slugs and snails emerge from hibernation where the ability to super-cool their bodies has protected them from freezing. Meanwhile, generations of eggs laid in the autumn are busy hatching throughout April and May. All of these animals emerge with raging appetites and, as the spring garden serves up a banquet of soft and succulent food, who can blame them for gorging at the feast? Nemaslug is harmless to other wildlife, pets, birds and children. Its only harmful to slugs, snails and water snails. Nemaslug might affect water snails. To avoid harming them, keep the treatment 15 cm (6″) away from ponds.

Nemaslug will kill snails, and many retailers sell it for that purpose, however Nemaslug is not generally an effective snail treatment due to the snail lifecycle. Nemaslug is effective in the soil and the majority of a snail's life is spent above the ground. ReapplyingNEMAslug contains millions of tiny nematodes called Heterorhabditis hermaphrodita which actively seek out all kinds of slugs and infect them with a bacteria which will stop them from feeding and kill them. The nematodes will then leave the corpse and seek out more slugs and snails. Unlike other slug controls you will not see dead slugs as they go underground to die. As NEMAslug is so safe, it can be used on all edible crops and ornamentals. The nematodes can also be used to control (nude) snails such as field snails (Deroceras sp.), many bottom snails (Oxyloma sp.) and road snails (Arion sp.). TIP: Nematodes are capable of surviving the odd frost; so don't worry if the temperature falls after you have applied Nemaslug. Even if nighttime temperatures drop below 5ºC (40ºF), the soil will retain much of the daytime heat. Each application of nematodes will provide at least six weeks control of slugs. This is generally enough time for seedlings and bedding plants to get well established. The majority of the slugs will die underground, so don't expect to see dead slugs lying around. One application will provide control for up to 6 Weeks, for continued protection re-apply at this time. Slug pellets can provide good localised control at the point of application but are less effective during wet weather, and there are increasing concerns about the effects of these chemicals on wildlife and pets. When to apply Nemaslug outdoors:

Nemaslug can be applied any time when slugs are present as long as the soil temperature is 5oC (40oF). Nemaslug can be used on clay soils that have been well worked with other organic materials. Do not use if the area you wish to treat is waterlogged or very heavy wet clay. There are also various barrier and capture methods, some of which work better than others. However, they nearly all rely on the slugs being above ground to be effective.
