But seriously, there are dozens more. You don’t need the IO board if you aren’t planning on using the analog output for a CRT display. There is a digital IO board, which includes the fan, a digital audio output, but can’t output to a CRT simultaneously. If you only want CRT output, you can use the DE10-Nano’s HDMI port and a cheap adapter to get 240p video out to a CRT with minimal lag. Just a note: Make sure to get an adapter with a compatible chipset!

MiSTer is an open-source project designed to recreate the functionality of classic PCs, arcade games, and consoles as accurately as possible. To do this, MiSTers use FPGA (field-programmable gate array) technology. While most processors have a fixed architecture, FPGAs are designed to be reconfigured to clone whatever old gaming hardware they’re programmed to. RetroRGB: A mainstay of the retro gaming scene, and a great place to learn about new developments in the MiSTer community. Why, it simulates video game and computer hardware, in case that wasn’t perfectly clear. Using the default configuration, either included with your kit or found as SD disk image files on the interwebs, the MiSTer comes with a wide array of computer and console cores built right in. For things like computers and consoles, all that work translates into hundreds or thousands of games per platform. For arcade boards, that might only result in a handful of games, making the mark that much more impressive and painstaking.

There are two ways to get analog video from a MiSTer: Using an I/O board, or an HDMI to VGA adapter. At the moment, the I/O board is great for people who need component video, or independent dual-output for things like 240p or 480p over analog and 1080p (or others) over HDMI. You can still get dual-output for streaming with Direct Video by using an HDMI Splitter to route the signal to a capture card as well – You’ll just need to compensate for the lower resolution in OBS.
