About this deal

Somehow, the latter went into production first, with Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix attached to star. And while the DC-connected Leto project floundered, Joker proved to be a surprise success. Naturally enough, Warners didn’t want to mess with a winning team and convinced both director and star to return for another dance in the pale moonlight.

The Joker's popularity (and his role as Batman's enemy) has involved the character in most Batman-related media, from television to video games. [2] [6] These adaptations of the character have been received positively [19] on film, [226] [227] television, [228] and in video games. [229] As in the comics, the character's personality and appearance shift; he is campy, ferocious or unstable, depending on the author and the intended audience. In Batman: Two Faces, the Joker is not an independent entity, but a shared identity created when a potion created by Bruce Wayne to give himself superhuman strength also creates a new personality, Bruce alternating randomly between himself and the Joker, his Batman identity fighting crime, while the Joker commits murders. After he realizes the truth and confesses to his allies, Bruce, unable to cure himself, allows himself to fall off a building to stop the Joker once and for all. a b Collura, Scott (November 7, 2006). The conclusion of the 2020 " Joker War" storyline by writer James Tynion IV and artist Jorge Jiménez sees the Joker leave Gotham after Batman chooses to let him die. [66] This led to a second ongoing Joker series, beginning in March 2021 with Tynion writing and Guillem March providing art. Character Evolution

The Joker is obsessed with Batman, the pair representing a yin-yang of opposing dark and light force; although it is the Joker who represents humor and color and Batman who dwells in the dark. [111] No crime – including murder, theft, and terrorism – is beyond the Joker, and his exploits are theatrical performances that are funny to him alone. Spectacle is more important than success for the Joker, and if it is not spectacular it is boring. [112] Although the Joker claims indifference to everything, he secretly craves Batman's attention and validation. [113] [32] The character was described as having killed over 2,000 people in The Joker: Devil's Advocate (1996). Despite this body count, he is always found not guilty by reason of insanity and sent to Arkham Asylum, avoiding the death penalty. [114] [115] Many of the Joker's acts attempt to force Batman to kill; to the Joker, the greatest victory would be to make Batman become like him. The Joker displays no instinct for self-preservation, and is willing to die to prove his point that anyone could become like him after "one bad day". [116] The Joker is the "personification of the irrational," and represents "everything Batman [opposes]." [117] Personality Joker co-creator Jerry Robinson in 2008; he conceived the Joker as an exotic, enduring archvillain who could repeatedly challenge Batman Vineyard, Jennifer (August 4, 2008). Ledger's death affected the marketing campaign for The Dark Knight [35] and also both the production and marketing of Terry Gilliam's film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus; both Nolan and Gilliam celebrated and paid tribute to Ledger's work in these films. [31] [35] [36] [37] During production of The Dark Knight, Jai White's Gambol was meant to survive his confrontation with Ledger's Joker, which would have resulted in the Joker giving Gambol a Glasgow smile of his own and enabling the filmmakers to reuse Gambol in the future, [38] with Jai White commenting that Gambol was supposed to have a bigger role in further sequels, returning to Gotham City and trying to take it over. [39] Following Ledger's passing, despite the film's script not calling for Gambol's death, Nolan cut out several of Gambol's planned scenes and the editors had Gambol killed off by the Joker during their confrontation, something Jai White didn't find out until seeing the film during its premiere. The frequency with which mass shootings now occur in America (in 2012 James Holmes killed 12 people at a screening of The Dark Night in Aurora, Colorado) has also lead to concerns about how the story will be read. The same Indiewire review criticised the film as “a toxic rallying cry for self-pitying incels”. a b Macek III, J.C. (February 26, 2013). "Spotlight on The Dark Knight: 'The Smile on the Bat' ". "Christopher Nolan Reflects on His Batman Trilogy, Heath Ledger & More". Comic Book Resources. Montreal, Quebec, Canada: Valnet, Inc . [219] In 2008 Wizard 's list of "200 Greatest Comic Book Characters of All Time" placed the Joker fifth, [220] and the character was eighth on Empire 's list of "50 Greatest Comic Book Characters" (the highest-ranked villain on both lists). [221] In 2009, the Joker was second on IGN 's list of "Top 100 Comic Book Villains," [222] and in 2011, Wired named him "Comics' Greatest Supervillain." [223] Complex, CollegeHumor, and WhatCulture named the Joker the greatest comic book villain of all time [211] [131] [224] while IGN listed him the top DC Comics villain in 2013, [225] and Newsarama as the greatest Batman villain. In 1975, the Joker did something no other DC villain had done before—star in his own ongoing series! The Joker ran for nine issues and featured the Clown Prince going up against non-Gotham superheroes and rival super-villains. It was something of a curious title. Since the Joker was the protagonist, the restrictions from the Comics Code regarding the book were a bit tighter, forcing all the stories to end with the Joker receiving comeuppance for his crimes. The villain’s bloodlust also had to be toned down, but the series still effectively captured the Clown Prince of Crime’s essence. The schemes were nutty, the guest stars were inspired and the entire series made for a fun reading experience. Unfortunately, the comic was cancelled after the 9 th issue, but the Joker wasn’t going anywhere. He still had big plans in Gotham. Mark Hamill has voiced the Joker in animation and video games since 1992. Heath Ledger won a posthumous Academy Award for his interpretation of the character in 2008's The Dark Knight. Joaquin Phoenix won an Academy Award for his interpretation of the character in 2019's Joker.
