On 11 April 2011, the Supreme Court of India dismissed the appeal filed against the sentence to life imprisonment for the four accused, scathingly criticizing the atrocities committed by Punjab Police during the disturbance period. [19] [1] Legacy [ edit ] Memorial [ edit ]

It must be understood that there can be no creative or intellectual freedom, which is essential to public discourse and our liberation, within the confines of the Indian state. India routinely engages in censorship , has imprisoned artists , journalists , climate rights activists , human rights defenders, and sought to viscously annihilate all militant resistance to its power. Even Indian liberals consistently demonise Khalistan and uphold its erasure. Global protests were prompted by Khalra’s study on 25,000 illegal cremations that took place in Punjab during the mid-1980s and mid-1990s during the height of the insurgency. This led the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to the conclusion that 2097 persons had been illegally cremated by the Punjab police in Tarn Taran district. I have come to Canada to talk about a report. That report describes the story of oppression of the past ten years. When we started that report, we had before us hundreds of reports, but there was one question to which none of those reports provided the answer. That question was: Thousands of mothers await their sons even though some may know that the oppressor has not spared their son’s lives on this earth. But a mother’s heart is such that even if she sees her son’s dead body, she does not accept that her son has left her. And those mothers who have not even seen their children’s dead bodies, they were asking us: at least find out, is my son alive or not?The City Council of Fresno approved the proposal to rename Victoria Park after Jaswant Singh Khalra on 26 August 2017. [20] After bringing the motion before the City Council, the council member Oliver Baines said, "Jaswant Singh Khalra for Punjabi/Sikh Community is like Martin Luther King Jr. for my community." According to the Central Bureau of Investigation in India, 2,097 people had been illegally cremated in three districts of Punjab state between 1984 and 1994 though human rights advocates have said more than 6,000 could have been cremated. And that special gift, which the Guru possesses, is the gift of martyrdom. Those who receive this gift, they don't get to be Guru but after the Guru, they are the most respected people of our (Sikh) nation. On 9 September 1995, a PIL was filed by Paramjit Kaur seeking justice for her husband’s death. It took ten years to bring Khalra’s custodial death case to trial, but in 2005, the nonprofit organization Ensaaf worked alongside private attorneys to bring the perpetrators to justice. Collaboratively, NGOs Ensaaf, Human Rights Watch (HRW), REDRESS, and the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice issued a call to the CBI in May 2006 for the investigation and prosecution of former police chief KPS Gill in the murder. Six police officials were convicted of the murder of Khalra out of which five were sentenced to life imprisonment in 2007, and the sixth official was acquitted. The SC held, Supreme Court of India and the National Human Rights Commission certified the validity of his data.
