About this deal

A Garage Consumer is a type of consumer unit and distribution board (aka mini consumer unit) used to extend and provide electric supply to the exterior buildings such as shed, workshop or other outdoor installations in the garage. To find out all about these circuits and how they are wired up, read on below. Ring Mains, Wiring Regulations and Electrical Safety Once all the testing has been completed the next job is to isolate the power to the existing fuse/circuit board and then remove it.

Similarly, connect the Phase or Live wire “L” (Brown color) to the live terminal of RCD. The output Live terminal of RCD should be bonded to other MCB’s via a common copper busbar segment terminal. Ring circuits are normally fed with a 30 or 32 amp fuse or MCB, but if feed is supplied through a 4mm cable then the spurs could also be feed with 30 or 32 amp fuse or MCB.Once the first MCB is connected up, the others are connected in the same way, ensuring that each is connected to the correct size of MCB for the item(s) it’s powering. The reason this size cable is used is that it ensures that enough current can be supplied to all the likely appliances that could be plugged into it and also that any voltage drop won’t be sufficient enough to effect the operation of appliances. Today, many consumer units that are installed will feature at least 1 RCD, sometimes 2 as this is really considered to be the “belt and braces” approach. If not, then most likely today, each circuit will use an RCBO. You have done, the electrical appliances now can be connected to the new wired consumer unit and its MCB’s via three wires i.e. Brown as Live “L”, Blue as Neutral “N” and Protective Earth “E” as Green with Yellow Stripe.

RCD’s can also be switched off manually and can take the place of the isolator switch in the consumer unit, if they break live and neutral. Never ever try to play with electricity (as it is dangerous and can be fatal) without proper guidance and care. Do the installation and repairing work in presence of experienced persons having vast knowledge and good practice who knows how to deal with electricity. Step 2 – Install MCB/RCBO: As the circuit must have its own MCB or RCBO, first a new one is installed within the consumer unit in the appropriate place. Depending on what it will be powering will depend where it goes as the more power hungry circuits tend to be placed closer to the main switch and RCD

However it is possible to add more but they should always have a fused connection unit or FCU between them and the location you’re taking power from. If the circuit was originally a ring main but this has become broken and is now a spur or radial main then it could be fed with 2.5mm and 32 amp fuse. Disconnect the power supply (and make sure it is really switched OFF) before servicing, repairing or installing electrical equipment. To do so, switch off the main switch in the main consumer unit or distribution board. days. We endeavour to keep you updated on your delivery, however, please be advised that this might just be a named day service within normal working hours. Obviously, when a consumer unit is being installed the power to your entire house is isolated so that everything can be connected up and tested before it put live for use!

Aside form the Part P requirements, there are quite a few other rules that govern how a ring main is installed such as the type of cable that can be used, the total floor area the circuit covers, the total length of the circuit and whether it’ll be powering outdoor appliances, more on this below. The author will not be liable for any losses, injuries, or damages from the display or use of this information or if you try any circuit in wrong format. So please! Be careful because it’s all about electricity and electricity is too dangerous. As they are very sensitive to the slightest bit of earth leakage, it is not practical to fit one RCD to protect the whole house, hence the reason they are split over 2 circuits, normally one upstairs and one for downstairs. A ring main uses 2.5mm twin and earth cable comprising of a live, neutral and earth (T&E or two core and earth cable as it’s also known). The 2.5mm is the measurement of the cross sectional area of the cables. This range of all metal enclosures are manufactured from steel and are compliant with the 17th Edition Wiring Regulations, Amendment 3. Enclosure kits are supplied complete with devices, DIN rail, neutral cable, neutral and earth terminals and a busbar. An information label near the consumer unit explains this. The resistor passes more current than that required for tripping, and the duration of the test is not limited, so testing in this way does not provide proof that the unit is working to specification. Essentially, if you understand this paragraph then you are able to test yourself. If you do not, leave it alone.
