American Cane Self Defense is by far the best and most comprehensive cane fighting course available. It is taught by the Grand Cane Master Joe Robaina. Free PDFs And Materials Having said that, a wooden cane will be fine for most people. Because they're lightweight, wooden canes are the perfect self-defense canes for seniors. Sheyi Cole as Wheatle, in Steve McQueen’s TV film series Small Axe . Photograph: Will Robson-Scott/BBC/McQueen Limited Moving forward, I hope many of my talented peers decide to create and place young adult characters in historical situations. We need to remind society that young people lived and suffered through these harrowing events too, and perhaps we can all try to aspire to live in a world where a young person is not exposed to so much cruelty, violence and inhumanity. For survival situations - metal cane is the way to go. Besides being a self-defense tool, it will also function as an improvised crowbar. I'd rather have you strike one power shot at your opponent than sit there beating him down.

Moa joined the rebelli0n that started on Easter Sunday with slaves lying low at first, with the goal of killing all the white men with billhooks. Violence through killing, fear of being killed, courage to take action and pride that they did. It took courage for them to do this but when you read the book, you think what other alternative did they have. Alex Wheatle is the real deal; he writes with heart and authenticity, books that make you laugh and worry and cry and hold your breath. It's a pity there's only one of him -- Kit de Waal It's possible to learn the basics of using a cane for self-defense by yourself. Here are two books that'll get you started (we recommend you get both, they're worth it): The importance of this book cannot be overstated. Alex Wheatle takes the truth, and creates fiction to illuminate that truth. He too is a warrior. A word warrior.I saw my ancestors in this book, and now I know that Alex and I really are brothers.’ Benjamin Zephaniah The new events will be funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of the wider “Our Tower” regeneration planRecent events (e.g. the murder of George Floyd, public demonstrations, racial profiling by police in the UK, public statues questioned) can be empowering - especially for young people. We need balance, we need joy too.

The book begins with Moa after a hard day in the field trying to get some sleep when he is approached by another of the workers who explains that in just a few days on Easter Monday the men are going to kill the slave owners. They are fed up with being treated badly and made to do all the work whilst the owners and their family sit in the big houses and have lavish lifestyles. They are also fed up with them using their women for sex.Alex Wheatle's prose is what truly drew me into this story, it is beautifully written, and hard to put down. This is a story that needs to be told. This is history that must not be forgotten. The fight against injustice must continue! This is a vital part of British and Jamaican history brought vividly to life. Alex Wheatle has reclaimed our ancestors and given them the voice they were denied-- Catherine Johnson

I enjoyed how Cane Warriors uses a lot of patois in the book to remain authentic to the voice of Jamaican enslaved people and thought this was very effective. He wrote and performed UPRISING, a one man play based on his own life at TARA ARTS STUDIOS, Wandsworth, London. There are a couple of criticisms I have about this book. Firstly, I found the amount of characters almost overwhelming. I wish either other characters were more dwelled upon or it was more focused on Moa. I found this book a little slow and repetitive but this did allow more time for character development and to delve into the emotions of the characters. More recently, Wheatle has moved into writing for a YA audience, with his award-winning Crongton series featuring the admirable Liccle Bit and his network of likeable young friends taking their first steps into challenging adult life, much like Moa. Cane Warriors’ narrator is 14-year-old Moa, who is on the cusp of becoming a man. He’s informed by another plantation worker that there is going to be a rebellion on Easter Sunday, when the slave owners and the overseers will all be together. For now, though, he’s waiting out the pandemic, pondering a possible move out of London and publishing another young adult novel: The Humiliations of Welton Blake, a ribald comedy of errors that bloomed directly from “needing to laugh” after Cane Warriors. This shouldn’t be construed as him being done with historical narratives however – long-held plans to write about “Caribbean migration to Panama and subsequently what happened with other slave revolts” are taking shape.

Author Anna Kemp introduces The Hollow Hills, the sequel to her dark magical tale, Into Goblyn Wood. Alex Wheatle writes from a place of honesty and passion with the full knowledge and understanding that change can only happen through words and actions’ Steve McQueen (director 12 Years a Slave) The importance of this book cannot be overstated. Alex Wheatle takes the truth, and creates fiction to illuminate that truth. He too is a warrior. A word warrior. I saw my ancestors in this book, and now I know that Alex and I really are brothers.’ Benjamin Zephaniah A self-defense cane will have notched gripping surfaces on the shaft (top and bottom). They're there to help you hold the cane during a fight. This middle-grade/young adult book is not for the faint of heart. It is bloody, violent and ruthless. In contrast to these brutal events, Wheatle writes lyrically and with nuance.. . Cane Warriorscenters the voice of the enslaved rather than white abolitionists. In this way, readers face the reality of enslaved people who fought for their own freedom.’ World of Words RecommendsAnd looks are important – you don’t want to walk around town looking like a psychopath killer out of a zombie movie. To find the best self-defense / fighting cane, we went out and reviewed 16 different canes - wood, metal, and electric. This story was short, but impactful. It highlighted one of the less talked about slave rebellions in Jamaica's history, of which there were quite a few. I would highly recommend this to anyone at all - ESPECIALLY if this is your first historical fiction to read. The only thing is, there's a bit of profanity and quite a few graphically gory scenes, so brace yourselves. But overall? This was amazing! Metal canes (usually made of airplane-grade aluminum) are tougher than wooden canes. They're unbreakable in all but extreme situations. At the cost of a slightly heavier weight, you're getting a cane that will last you a lifetime.
