About this deal

I wasn't first on this bandwagon; I was last. But as any true believer — or replayer — knows, there's a strange odd power in knowing you're not alone in this world. Es interesante desde el punto de vista que habla de muchas cosas muy diferentes, desde los primeros videojuegos en computadora y las diferentes consolas, hasta abordando los primeros juegos o los mas representativos para cada genero de videojuego.

I began my research about the history of video games with this book and it basically ended here. Every book certainly has its limitations - it cannot comment on and mention everything, especially in a field as rich, widespread, and decentralized as video games. But truly, this book does an outstanding job presenting a full and broad perspective of how video games came into existence and into cultural prominence. After Walk Two Moons came Chasing Redbird, Pleasing the Ghost, Bloomability, The Wanderer, and Fishing in the Air. I hope to be writing stories for a long, long time. I'm amazed at how much 'users are not like you' hampered early adoption, and how 90% of the early amateur games from the pre-microprocessor era were deleted from history by mainframe admins to save memory. How might those games have shaped the hobby if not deleted?

What we know about this man can be expressed in one sentence. He has to have what he wants. What he wants is usually sex. Clarification? Okay, he has to have sex with perfect women. Clarify still more? Okay, if they are only perfect on the outside, he tires of them and goes on to choose exactly the same kind of woman he had before. During one subsequent replay, Jeff takes notice of a highly acclaimed film, Starsea, that has become a huge success at the box office in 1974. The film is written and produced by an unknown filmmaker, Pamela Phillips, who has recruited Steven Spielberg to direct and George Lucas as a special effects supervisor, before the two shot to stardom with their own projects. Because the film did not exist in previous replays, Jeff suspects that Pamela is also experiencing the same phenomenon. He locates her and asks her questions about future films which only a fellow replayer would know, confirming his suspicions.

Customer Reviews

I don't really care about genre categories and whether Replay should be considered science fiction or fantasy or mainstream (speculative fiction seems the best bet) . The author deliberately avoids any attempt at a scientific explanation for the ordeal/blessing Jeff is subjected to, because the point of the novel is self discovery and the Meaning of Life. Jeff exclaims at one point: Sharon Creech has to be one of my all-time favorite authors. I have loved everything I've ever read that she wrote. This book was no exception. I've had it on my shelf to read forever...but I think I was put off by the cover. I mean, a FISH? I didn't want to read a book about fishing.

By contrast, there is very little discussion of religion or politics or anything that would get people all "RILED UP" in Replay. So ... maybe that's why this book didn't become an "international sensation" like the DaVinci Code. Yuuta still feels lingering for the baseball and can't believe it's really over. The only one who can truly understand him is Ritsu. Ritsu seems to be over that though and only looks towards the future in university. Both of them slowly realize love for baseball is not the only thing they share. Progress of their relationship is pretty slow (for my taste), but it doesn't mean it was bad. I was a little bit of confused about it halfway through though. As for the sex scenes, nothing graphic and only in the end.

See you soon

I don't care about baseball but this one-shot didn't even have that much of it actually. Yes, Ritsu and Yuta talk about baseball a fair bit: they played it throughout the school, after all. But they don't play anymore: they are "retired" i.e. they are not in their school's team anymore because their graduation is closing and they are busy with university exams. Video games emerged in the late 20th century as a completely novel form of entertainment. Replay recounts the history of how programming experiments and text-based adventures were transformed first into a new hobby with widespread juvenile appeal, then a serious platform for storytelling, and then ..became ubiquitous. I absolutely loved this Love x Love manga from TokyoPop. As of lately this publishing house has been on a role with their BL manga and GL manga, and Replay was no exception. Honestly anything this publishing house puts out I will read at this point! The author does a great job of illuminating the main character's inner dialog and questions about his predicament. At each point in the novel, the protagonist responds to his situation sensibly and/or understandably, demonstrating smarts, will-power, perseverance, and human fallibility (his patience can and does reach a limit). I liked the plot twists and turns ... at least for the first 2/3 of the book, I really had no idea WHAT was going to happen next. I was hoping it wouldn't end the way it did, simply because that's what I was guessing might happen ... but the author did keep me guessing for the majority of it, so I am mostly satisfied.

Americans of baby-boomer age (and older) will probably personally remember all the historic references and follow along with the book as if re-living their own lives. I grew up in the 80s, so I didn't have THAT feeling reading the book, but at least I was familiar with the goings-on and could imagine what it would have been like. But, as these events recede further and further into the past, I'm not sure how much these "what-once-were-current events" will resonate with people. At thirty-seven, Marc Levy wrote a story for the man that his son would grow up to be. In early 1999, his sister, a screenwriter (now a film director), encouraged him to send the manuscript to a French publisher, who immediately decided to publish If Only It Were True. Before it was published, Steven Spielberg (Dreamworks) acquired film rights to the novel. The movie, Just like Heaven, starring Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo, was a #1 box office hit in America in 2005. It's just such a shame that this amazing premise gets squandered. Jeff, and then Jeff and Pamela when he meets her during his third replay, speculate a little as to the cause and reason behind their staggered, spiralling reincarnations. Yet there is no payoff. None. We never learn why or how they keep reliving their lives, just that they have learned some big lesson about making the most out of their futures. Except I'm pretty sure that Jeff is just going to continue evaluating women's worth as sex objects and being a terrible husband, because he is the worst. This is intended to make REPLAY suitable for audiences with sensory sensitivities. This may include children, young people and adults with neurodivergence such as autism, learning difficulties or other sensory or communication needs.
