Doolin to Kinvarra – 1-hour drive (we’re going to allow for 3 – Leave Doolin at 10:30, arrive in Kinvarra for 13:30) // No Wild Atlantic Way itinerary (or Ireland itinerary, for that matter) is complete without a spin over to Achill.
The county is a popular destination for outdoor lovers due to the Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Slieve Mish mountains and Mount Brandon on the Dingle Peninsula. The weather on the Wild Atlantic Way is completely unpredictable. Sun, rain, wind, sideways rain, and hail are all possibilities – all on the same day!

The Wild Atlantic Way is the longest signed coastal route in the world at 2,750 km (1,700 miles) in length with plenty side routes, loops and activities. Have lunch at Maddens Bridge Bar & Restaurant in Bundoran, where you can sample local Donegal oysters fresh from Traigheanna Bay. Even though my rental company wanted to ‘do me a favor’ and upgrade me to a bigger car, I had no desire to be driving a big car on the WAW. I requested the smallest car they had since it was only me on the trip. I preferred small and zippy for the little roads. However, there were a few new things I tried too, such as learning how to adore vinegar on fries. The more the better!
Spend some time in the morning exploring Westport, a quintessential Irish town with a Georgian town center that offers a dose of nature, culture, and a pretty tree-lined promenade on the banks of the Carrowbeg River. The city’s hub is the busy 18th century Eyre Square, a popular meeting place full of modern sculptures and trees, and surrounded by shops and traditional pubs that often offer live Irish folk music.I never need to plan a visit to Waterville. It’s like my subconscious arranges every trip to Kerry so that one way or another, I just end up there. This circular 1.5Km trail starts and ends at the castle, taking from 50-60 min at a leisurely pace. The surface is good at all stages and very steep for several short distances. Follow the direction of the road behind the castle, taking the path uphill just outside the garden gates. The route is signposted from here.’ Co Waterford: Waterford, Ireland's Oldest City, the House of Waterford Crystal & Mount Congreve Gardens Plus, as a solo traveler, it was a super way to socialize. The Irish are so kind and welcoming, and they love to show off their home.
Sligo is a county that is steeped in history and folklore. There are multiple areas throughout the county that are related to Irish mythology. the Wild Atlantic Way travels the entire west coast from the picturesque town of Kinsale in Cork through counties Kerry, Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim and ends in Donegal Stop in Tralee to enjoy the Tralee Bay Wetlands Eco and Activity Park, and visit the Kerry County Museum and Blennerville Windmill, authentically restored and the largest working windmill in Ireland. Continue your journey to Kinnagoe Bay and then to Pólifreann or Hells Hole, a subterranean cavern into which the tide explodes with a huge force. Malin Head lies about 27 miles / 43km north of Muff and is the most northerly point of mainland Ireland. This wild and rugged place is somewhere to come and marvel at the raw power of nature, breathe in the clean air, and revel in the peace and solitude.I spent a lot of time going to local pubs and eating a lot of fish and chips, burgers, and seafood soup. Kippers for breakfast Along the way, you can decide to stop to take in incredible views or to visit certain places along the Wild Atlantic Way. Just make sure you factor time into your day for this.
