Swiss Jam Roll –We use Swiss rolls from the store, but it’s also popular to use madeira cake, Italian sponge fingers like in tiramisu or homemade Vanilla sponge cake. Whether you slice it or chop it into squares is completely up to you and the presentation you want to achieve. A trifle is made in a similar manner to a tiramisu. I had actually made a white cake and we only used a few pieces, so I used the rest to make my trifle. A trifle is a layered colorful dessert that is pleasing to the eye as well as the palate. It consists of various layers and they are: If I had to choose one dessert as the most nostalgic for me, that would be this family recipe for English Trifle. Every holiday we would travel to my aunt’s house for a huge feast and a dazzling dessert table covered with homemade chocolate cake, lemon and mincemeat tarts, usually a pie of some sort, and of course, English Trifle. A trifle is a layered dessert that contains custard, sherry-soaked cake, fruit, jam and whipped cream.

Traditionally, this old-school dessert consists of cake pieces, custard and sliced fruit layered in a clear dish. Trifles require little cooking and there are infinite combinations of ingredients you can mix and match. Follow along for expert tips on how to make a trifle. How to Make the Perfect Trifle Layering –Best tip here is to slow down and be careful. Take your time when layering the cream on the custard in particular. Have a light hand as you spread it around so you don’t end up pushing the cream into the custard. The first time I made a trifle for my parents at home, I bought the sponge cake from a bakery but now I make the Sponge Cake from scratch at home and it tastes so much better. To this day this famous English dessert is still a favorite with my family and it has also been requested by some of our readers. What are the layers of a trifle? To help the cake soak up all the flavours, it’s drizzled with cranberry juice. Again, if you prefer another liquid, like apple juice or a liquor, you can use that. But cranberry juice works really well with all the berry flavours that are going on in my Trifle recipe. To make the custard begin by heating the milk in a saucepan. You just want it to come to a simmer, you’ll see steam rising from the surface as well. (If you are using Bird’s custard, follow the preparation instructions on the canister for two pints.) Note: Please scroll to the recipe card at the bottom for the ingredients quantities and full detailed method.

Trifle pudding is a stunning dessert choice as it is bright, colorful, and delicious. It is also very easy to make and is perfect if you have leftover sponge cake. Plus you only need 5 ingredients to make it! Did you just get that last-minute invite to a soiree, and now need to find a showstopper dessert to prepare? Don’t have time to make a dessert from scratch? Fear not, I’ve found your solution: the trifle. Because you are brushing the cake with sherry, you want the cake pieces to be small enough to soak it up. I sliced my cake in half horizontally. Slice jam scrollor cake into 1.5cm wide slices. Arrange in a single layer in a deep trifle dish. Optional: Then arrange one row of slices around the edge. Fresh strawberries- summer is the perfect time to make this strawberry trifle! Kid-friendly - for a trifle that the entire family can enjoy, simply replace the Cointreau that is drizzled over the Madeira cake with fruit juice (cranberry, orange or apple juice work well). In a bowl, whisk the egg yolks together with the sugar and cornstarch. It will be all lovely and yellow. One thing to be aware of when it comes to using fruit in jelly is that some fresh fruits will prevent your jelly from setting; these include fresh pineapple, kiwi and papaya. Using these fruits are part of tinned mixture doesn’t seem to have that effect though…don’t ask me why.
