Al rientro a casa ho avuto il bisogno di audioleggere (letto da Fabrizio Gifuni) per l’ennesima volta i capitoli sulla morte di Adele: questa parte nel film è stata amputata. In The Hummingbird, there's a brief reference to an incident in which a motorbike rider travelling along a motorway near Pisa is killed because the hook on a helicopter flying overhead carrying a tank of water, breaks at just the wrong moment. The rider hasn't a chance, squashed between the tank and the asphalt. This book, which mainly revolves around someone being in the wrong place at the wrong time, suffered the same fate as the motorbike rider in terms of my reading experience. It got squashed between two powerful books: overshadowed by the one I read before it, trivialised by the one I read after it. Ho aperto un Nebbiolo, mio rosso preferito ever. Racconta la vita, la resistenza, il voler essere solidi, fermi con tutta la fatica che comporta, il riuscirci e il non riuscirci. Racconta gli amori, quelli sbagliati che in fondo sono anche giusti. Racconta gli inizi e le inevitabili fini, racconta la malattia, la morte, la vicinanza e la lontananza. I don’t remember how I came to be interested in this novel, apart from the fact that I am in the look-out for contemporary Italian fiction. This was the Strega prize in 2020. Veronesi is a Florentine architect, and this is not the first time he gets the prestigious Strega. The previous one, for his Caos calmo, he received several years ago. I may give it a chance.

Kalme chaos was geweldig en indrukwekkend. Dopo però la cosa travalica ogni limite, il latte alle ginocchia diventa insostenibile, il libro si fa sempre più vomitevole mano a mano che le pagine progrediscono fino alle ultime nauseabonde dieci pagine che ho trovato davvero incommentabili. E fin qui si può apprezzare lo sforzo di mettere in piedi una storia inverosimile (presumo, anzi spero, che l’autore abbia attinto a più esempi della cerchia di amici e conoscenti) ma avvincente, con un tentativo di alleggerire grazie al pastiche della corrispondenza, ma quando si fa ricorso a trucchetti da scuola-di-scrittura quali gli elenchi e le compilazioni, io sento puzza di scorciatoia. Non si ha voglia/non si è capaci di contestualizzare il personaggio, di dargli un profilo che non sia quello ritagliato con l’accetta della prima persona, e allora si fa fare il lavoro sporco all’autore.
