About this deal

We tested it in the grey version – a medium smoky tone that provided excellent coverage after a couple of coats (as it’s a thin primer, one coat was a bit patchy). We liked its speedy drying time – around an hour before another coat – and there was no strong smell, plus we could wash brushes using soap and water. In the past, we’ve had many customers ask us “Does tile paint work?” and the simple answer is yes. Many companies like Johnstone’s and Dulux specifically formulate paint that’s designed to have high adhesion to ceramic surfaces, making them ideal for application on tiles. All of our recommended specialist tile paints are tested using a small paint brush and a large, ceramic tile with a decorative glaze. Each coat of paint is allowed to dry for the recommended time, with a second coat applied if directed. One-coat products are left as a single coat to assess their claims of effectiveness. When redecorating spaces like your bathroom, you’ll want to have a variety of options and colours at your disposal and this is exactly what Rust-Oleum tile paint supplies. The specialist mould and water-resistant formula is perfect for steamy kitchens. Highly durable against everyday splashes and spills, this contemporary kitchen paint is available for use on glass, ceramic and stone tiles.

Drying Time: Touch dry in 1 hour. Hard dry in 4 hours. May be over coated after 4 hours. Full cure achieved after 7 days – take extra care during use in this time.If you were to apply a paint meant for walls then you’d have a problem as it isn’t formulated for use on ceramics meaning it wouldn’t have the same durability as tile paint. Easy to apply by brush or roller, choose from 100+ stunning colours and find the ideal shade for timeless tiles Highly concentrated for an exceptional depth of colour, transform hexagon, subway and diamond tiles with an immaculate matt finish. With no primer needed and a fast-drying time, updating your kitchen tiles has never been easier. This particular paint has great adhesion, can be applied thinly and is also resistant to impacts or abrasions. It also comes in a host of different colours (around 30 in total) and so allows you to get the finish you desire. This particular tile paint is one of the toughest and most durable on the market and is ideal for use in either the bathroom or kitchen. When compared to Dulux’s conventional water-based satin paints, it’s roughly 10x stronger which should give you a good idea as to how strong it is!

However, if you choose the wrong paint system, you could end up with a finished product that is bubbly, full of streaks and poor coverage. Other factors we take into consideration during our tests include the range of colours or tinting available, the paint’s value for money – especially when assessing one-coat products and any additional properties such as mould, moisture or heat resistance. Finally, we look at whether the paint can be used on other surfaces, so leftover product can be used up elsewhere. The paint went on easily and, although we needed two coats to cover the pattern on our tiles, dried to a pleasantly glossy finish. The smell was noticeable, but not strong, and the surface was touch-dry in around four hours. Colour choice for specialist tile paint can be limited, with some ranges only available in neutral shades, or one or two bolder tones. If you have a specific colour in mind, you can always prime tiles with a high-quality, solvent-based primer and use a high-gloss or semi-gloss paint for the top coats. Just be aware that the surface will probably not be as durable as using a specialist tile paint.

Ronseal are a trusted brand but on this occasion the paint seems very slightly off the mark. If you’re going to go with this paint make sure you have enough for a couple of coats.

Preparation: Ensure surface is clean, dry and free from contamination. Use sugar soap equivalent to remove all traces of contamination, rinse surface afterwards with water. If wax or oil has previously been used on the item, clean the surface thoroughly with white spirit. If painting over a hard or glossy or previously painted surface abrade the surface before application. Lighter colours are more prone to showing marks, dirt and dust but to us this isn’t necessarily a bad thing as it will help you keep your kitchen or bathroom clean. Neutral Colours As an all-in-one gloss paint and primer, it’s suitable for use on bathroom tiles due to its superior durability in conditions where water is prevalent. If you can’t decide what looks better with your current colour scheme, choosing something neutral might be a good idea. Coverage: Up to 14m²/ litre per coat. Coverage may vary depending upon method and rate of application and porosity of surface.
