We will now look at an all-in-one device. This moisture meter type is designed to combine the benefits of the two aforementioned devices and sometimes a thermo-hygrometer too. Moisture meters can allow you to evaluate the levels of moisture in a given spot and may allow you to spot signs of a leak. For this section, we will explain what a moisture meter is, what it does, what it’s used for and who would use a moisture meter. Wood: Moisture meters designed specifically for wood can be used to determine whether wooden floors and subfloors have the appropriate moisture content. Testing should be performed at several locations, and then averaged out to determine overall content. BS 8201:2011, Code of practice for installation of flooring on wood and wood-based panels provides general guidance for determining moisture in wood flooring; however, it is important to take the environment into account when determining whether the moisture content is at the correct level or not.

These features can be super helpful if you’re going to be using your moisture meter a lot, as you won’t want to be caught without a spare battery when you need one. Detecting moisture within your walls is crucial to maintaining the integrity and appearance of your drywall. Look for visible signs of moisture, such as discolored areas, musty odors, or crumbling drywall, which may indicate significant water damage. The moisture meter should have an accuracy of ±1% and you’ll also want to look for a detection range of at least 5- 20 % . For log burning, wood needs to have a moisture content under 20%. If the moisture level is higher than this, the wood isn’t considered safe for burning and is also unlikely to burn well.

The most common, inexpensive moisture meters work by using pins. This type of measuring device features two, metal, needle-like pins which are inserted into the surface being tested. The meter measures the resistance of electricity between the pins and calculates the % moisture content sub-surface.
