About this deal

We will now look at an all-in-one device. This moisture meter type is designed to combine the benefits of the two aforementioned devices and sometimes a thermo-hygrometer too. Moisture meters can allow you to evaluate the levels of moisture in a given spot and may allow you to spot signs of a leak. For this section, we will explain what a moisture meter is, what it does, what it’s used for and who would use a moisture meter. Wood: Moisture meters designed specifically for wood can be used to determine whether wooden floors and subfloors have the appropriate moisture content. Testing should be performed at several locations, and then averaged out to determine overall content. BS 8201:2011, Code of practice for installation of flooring on wood and wood-based panels provides general guidance for determining moisture in wood flooring; however, it is important to take the environment into account when determining whether the moisture content is at the correct level or not.

An automatic turn off feature will help your meter’s batteries last longer. Tools with this function will tend to turn themselves off after a few minutes of inactivity. To help with battery saving, the moisture meter will automatically turn off after a period of inactivity. It also has a low battery indicator. These features can be super helpful if you’re going to be using your moisture meter a lot, as you won’t want to be caught without a spare battery when you need one. Detecting moisture within your walls is crucial to maintaining the integrity and appearance of your drywall. Look for visible signs of moisture, such as discolored areas, musty odors, or crumbling drywall, which may indicate significant water damage. The moisture meter should have an accuracy of ±1% and you’ll also want to look for a detection range of at least 5- 20 % . For log burning, wood needs to have a moisture content under 20%. If the moisture level is higher than this, the wood isn’t considered safe for burning and is also unlikely to burn well.

The most common, inexpensive moisture meters work by using pins. This type of measuring device features two, metal, needle-like pins which are inserted into the surface being tested. The meter measures the resistance of electricity between the pins and calculates the % moisture content sub-surface. You cannot use any type of electronic moisture meter to get a quantitative measure of the amount of moisture in masonry or plaster. This is for another video, but there are articles which we’ve written on this subject, if you’d like to explore these? There is a great guide on our Technical Director’s preservationexpert blog, which will help you differentiate between the different ways of measuring moisture in masonry, using electronic damp meters, Chemical moisture meters (speedy type), and the gravimetric method too. A conductivity moisture meter looks at the electrical resistance to its electrical circuit as a way to estimate the amount of moisture. A capacitance moisture meter carries a conductive plate and the meter then measures the fringe capacitance in the sensor to work out how much moisture exists in the wall.

Even if you could dry it out, it wouldn’t look the same because it would have lost its shape, and if pressure is applied, it will crumble. The drywall is not load-bearing, so it won’t affect the building’s structural integrity, but it must be replaced.Your screen will then give you either a percentage or a reference reading. Take note of the reading. Some moisture meters are more accurate than others. I recommend looking for a meter with at least an accuracy of around 1% each way. This means that a pinless moisture meter won’t mark the wood, which is useful if testing wood that will be on display – like shelving and doors. As a result, the normal moisture meter reading for these materials in between 0.5% and 1%. Higher values could mean a wet or saturated material.

DIYers and professionals in industries like home inspection, fine carpentry, and flooring use three common types of moisture meter: pin, pinless, and multifunctional. Pin Pin moisture meters get their name from the two metal prongs, or pins, that emerge from the top of the meter like antennae. These pins are what measure the moisture percentage. Using a pin moisture meter requires aligning the pins with a spot on the material, and then pushing them so they penetrate the material. This is another popular wood moisture meter. It offers a wide and accurate measuring range of 5% to 50% for wood. It is lightweight and durable. It also only requires a single 9-volt battery although the battery does not come with the product.
