About this deal

For the RIVER 2 Max, you can go from 0-100% battery in just 60 minutes using an outlet. At this rate, it’s five times faster than other options on the market and 38% faster than our previous RIVER generations. Keep in mind, RIVER 2 Pro doesn’t actually charge more slowly than the RIVER Max. The Pro has a bigger battery, so it takes longer to recharge fully. Like all the power stations I’ve tested the River 2 Max has a built-in MPPT controller for more efficient solar charging. Yes, the River 2 does allow power to be drawn out of it whilst it’s charging. This means it can be used as a quasi ‘ uninterrupted power supply‘ or UPS.

The LCD display on the River 2 Max is bright and clear, and shows information on remaining charge time when it’s charging and remaining run time when it’s powering your devices. You can use EcoFlow’s X-Boost technology to continuously power devices rated at up to 1000W by lowering their voltage. So I can run this heater in its low 1000W mode – double the true rated output of the River 2 Max. But the voltage drops from around 240V UK mains voltage to under 170V.Finally I tested the USB-C charging using the 100W output from my EcoFlow Delta 2. You do need to make sure you use a 100W rated cable with an E-marker chip, which isn’t supplied. I did get the full 100W, which will fully charge the power station in around 6 hours. Performance

The inverter on board has a 300W nominal capability, and the ability to surge at up to twice that (600W). Surging means using more power on a very short term basis of a few seconds. This is to turn on devices which require a high peak power at startup. Connect RIVER 2 Pro to our EcoFlow 220W Bifacial Portable Solar Panel and go from 0-100% battery in as little as 4.5 hours. However, a full recharge may take up to 9 hours, depending on the sun and weather conditions. When it comes to output and input, the DELTA 2 is on another level entirely. This can handle 1800W (Surge 2700W) across its four outlets and up to 2400W with X-Boost. I’ll run through its capabilities and thoroughly test all its claims to help you decide if this is the right power station for you. So let’s take a closer look. Overview The RIVER 2 Pro is heavier and slightly larger than the RIVER 2 Max. The Max weighs 13.4 lbs (6.1 kg) and has dimensions of 10.6 x 10.2 x 7.7 in (270 x 260 x 196mm).The Max is lighter and more compact than its counterpart. The Pro offers more electricity storage and output capacity for those who want to operate larger (or more) devices for longer. OK, we’ve spent alot of time with the River 2 – is it a useful device? The answer is yes, as long as you’re aware of how little power you have on board.

Both technologies have their fan base, with traditional lithium-ion (NMC) having better energy density and efficiency than LiFePO4. However not by much. In contrast, LiFePO4 is safer and can withstand many more charge/discharge cycles. About 6x as many (3000 vs 500) before the storage capacity has dropped to 80% of the starting amount. If you’re fully discharging charging the River 2 every single day for 8 years, it will still have 80% capacity available to you. Pretty reassuring in our opinion. Battery Capacity of the River 2 The River 2 Max has a 512Wh LiFePO4 or LFP battery which supports 3000 complete charge cycles compared to the 500 cycles of the River Max’s standard Li-ion battery. This is the smallest unit I’ve reviewed so far that comes with this more desirable battery chemistry.

Control at your fingertips.

So what’s our verdict on the EcoFlow River 2 power station? Well, if you’re looking for a small power station which can help tide you over on a camping trip to keep your gadgets charged, or you need a few hours blast on a cool box for a picnic then this is the one for you. With an input of around 220W and a starting charge of 48%, the unit reported that it would take 1 hour to complete charging. The cycle life of a portable power station measures how many times the battery can discharge and recharge before it begins to decrease in performance. A cycle refers to running the PPS from a full charge to zero.
