About this deal

Our college was located in a snow belt, which meant that December pretty much always had us dealing with lots of snow and super cold weather.

Large mixing bowl – you’ll need a large mixing bowl to cool your creamy dessert, before starting the second stage of the heating process. I’ll never tire of motherhood books that tell it like it is and I take a very dim view of those parenting manuals that assure you that baby should be running to your routine, will go down for a nap when you say, and go to bed when you say – especially when my youngest didn’t go to sleep unless he was being held FOR THREE YEARS. It’s recommended that you get the custard to between 160°F and 180°F. Get yourself a food thermometer and you’ll never end up with it curdled or split. From TV's award-winning comedy mum and the writer of Hullraisers, Lucy Beaumont, comes her hilarious debut on the trials and tribulations of motherhood. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, bring the milk to a simmer. Whisk together the eggs, sugar and salt in a medium bowl. Slowly whisk the hot milk into the egg mixture.

To enjoy the health benefits of custard powder, it is essential to take it in moderation and mix it with healthy ingredients. ALSO READ: Custard powder is derived from milk and contains no artificial flavors or preservatives. It can be added to many foods, such as waffles, pancakes, pastries, and puddings. The book opens with a chapter entitled “My life as a normal, single human being before everything changed”, which has some childhood memories (which actually continue throughout the book), involving gazebos and other memorable moments. The next goes on to her meeting and getting together with Jon, who adds “interruptions” through the book. Jon is a vegan, and she becomes one apart from during pregnancy, but both admit to lapses which include dead cows and her mother’s cooking when she arrives on mercy missions. She comes up with ten reasons why she wants a baby - which includes having a white carpet like in the adverts. Experienced baby carers will know that she is being foolishly optimistic at this point. She actually writes “The more I write, the more it’s dawning on me I’m not picturing a real baby, I’m picturing a calendar”. The challenges of pregnancy and antenatal groups are described with humour and brutal honesty, especially with her husband in attendance. She remembers stories of her own birth while her mother was on holiday, some points of which she sends to her mother some time later to clarify points of confusion - just to make sure that family legends are actually true. The actual birth story spares no details, including Jon’s strange urge to buy a four man tent. The unexplained post natal sadness (thankfully fairly brief) and the night feed experience is detailed, as well as the joys of baby massage (she is disappointed that the mums don’t get massaged). Soon Elsie the baby becomes the toddler, the bright child and all with a determination to sabotage sleep.

Lucy Beaumont - Drinking Custard: Diary Of A Confused Mum

Chocolate, Vanilla, and Strawberry Vanilla are the three flavors of Warm Vanilla Custard Drink, a caffeine-free drinkable custard that is ideal for breakfast or dessert. It’s a caffeine-free hot drink that’s ideal for breakfast or an easy treat. I’ve heard that it tastes like warm eggnog, which I suppose is true. However, egg nog is not something I enjoy very much. Hubs treated me to this after it was mentioned on MEET THE RICHARDSONS , we are not Parents to Human Children but we are Parents In our own fashion. Drinking Custard is a blessed relief from the current woes and uncertainties we all have and thoroughly unashamedly enjoyable

There are sporadic interjections from husband, Jon Richardson, reminiscent of their successful telly programme, Meet the Richardsons. It's a funny book, but there's real heart too; the importance of extended family and childhood experiences are a recurring theme, as well as Lucy's nostalgic ties to her homeland of Hull. Homemade custard in banana pudding is simply to die for, but I love a good old fashioned custard pie or a simple baked custard myself. Boiled custard is an old timey recipe that you really don't hear much about anymore, but when Mike, one of our Facebook readers brought it up, I knew it was time it found a home here. Essentially, boiled custard is simply the base for eggnog, but minus the alcohol.Just before serving, whip the egg whites separately with a pinch of cream of tartar, until fluffy. Shake the eggnog well, then add to the serving bowl and whisk in choice of alcohol. Drop dollops of whipped cream over the top of the serving bowl, and grate fresh nutmeg on top, if desired. Custard powder is one of the most popular ingredients used in baking because it adds flavor to baked goods while helping make them light and fluffy. Lactose-intolerant people also use it because it contains no dairy products.

I had SO MUCH FUN reading this book. I use caps because OH MY GOD IT’S BRILLIANT. Sorry to shout but it is. Where was this book 8 years ago when I first had my eldest, I would have killed to have something like this then. Every mum, new and old, even dads should read this. It’s highly relatable to how parenthood is terrifying as all hell but also a wonderful experience. So many hilarious situations, I loved the ‘playgroup’ stories and the real life Elsa for Elsie’s birthday but there are countless others to choose from, if I listed them all I would be retelling the whole book I love the honesty of the book and even as a non parent so recognise the ‘ loving I can shop in Waitrose but then wondering if I should be in Waitrose’, the author is a self confessed snob yet cant stand other snobs, something lots of us, in a completely honest moment can at least give a nod to Known for her sharp, witty and surreal view on everyday life, Lucy shares the unpredictable craziness of being a mum in this brilliant and laugh-out-loud ‘mumoir’. Mum’s everywhere will recognise the madness of it all. Like when Lucy was hospitalised with indigestion in her third trimester (blame the burrito), or when she was *this close* to slapping her hypo-birthing instructor. Or the efforts she made to infiltrate the local mums social groups and when she embarrassingly forgot her own new-born baby’s name! You could also plunge the saucepan into cold water (obviously, don’t get any cold water in the custard) and whisk the custard for up to 5 minutes. You should have perfectly smooth custard by this point. What's the difference between eggnog and boiled custard?Electric whisk – get one of these to whisk up the sugar and eggs. If you want to keep it old school and like to put the work in, get a regular balloon whisk. Chocolate fairy cakes with Amarula buttercream – these little beauties are just divine. The cakes are so light, moist and tasty, while the buttercream – with the addition of the secret ingredient Amarula – has to be tasted to be believed. bookstagram #bookstagramming #bookstagrammer #bookstagramuk #ukbookstagram #hereforthereads #bookish #bookworm #booknerd #bookcollector #tbr #books #booksbooksbooks #bibliophile #lucybeaumont #drinkingcustard #octopuspublishing #netgalley #newtobookstagram To Prepare Eggnog for a Punch Bowl: Make multiple batches of this recipe, as needed, for the size serving bowl, but prepare each batch individually. Once cooled, add in the extract and nutmeg, and then combine batches together. Use a funnel to transfer into large gallon sized jugs to refrigerate overnight, or several hours until needed.
