About this deal

The German Parliament building dates from the 19 th century but it was burned down soon after the Nazis assumed power in 1933. It remained in ruins until after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and it was decided to restore it to its former use, ending Bonn’s time as the capital of West Germany. Since the students who served in the Lützow Free Corps came from various German states, the idea of a unified German state began to gain momentum within the Urburschenschaft and similar Burschenschaft that were subsequently formed throughout the Confederation. On 18 October 1817, the fourth anniversary of the Battle of Leipzig, hundreds of fraternity members and academics from across the Confederation states met in Wartburg in Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (in modern Thuringia), calling for a free and unified German nation. Through the disposal of construction debris they surpassed Teufelsberg (120.1m or 394ft), which itself was made up of rubble from the ruins of the Second World War. [87] The Müggelberge at 114.7 meters (376ft) elevation is the highest natural point and the lowest is the Spektesee in Spandau, at 28.1 meters (92ft) elevation. The East German authorities did away with the chapel housing the tombs of the Hohenzollern dynasty – an Imperial mausoleum across the street from several Socialist landmarks (Alexanderplatz, the Fernsehturm TV Tower and the now-demolished Palast der Republik, which housed the GDR Parliament) was not the best look for a ruthless totalitarian state. Berlin's history has left the city with a polycentric organization and a highly eclectic array of architecture and buildings. The city's appearance today has been predominantly shaped by the key role it played in Germany's history during the 20th century. All of the national governments based in Berlin– the Kingdom of Prussia, the 2nd German Empire of 1871, the Weimar Republic, Nazi Germany, East Germany, as well as the reunified Germany– initiated ambitious reconstruction programs, with each adding its own distinctive style to the city's architecture.Time eventually passed Tempelhof by, and it was decided to close it and Tegel airport so that all air traffic to Berlin would come through the new Berlin-Brandenburg airport at Schonefeld It’s one of the most unusual places to visit in Berlin, a building that is not there.
