There’s hardly anything negative to say about this product. I didn’t encounter anything that put me off completely, which is a testament to Aputure’s design. But there were a couple of small things I should mention. The cooling fan is one of them, and the battery functionality is another. The app experience was also an issue, though to a smaller extent. Fan Noise The new mini reflector being much smaller has a new design with three extended arms to attach to the Bownes Mount. Hopefully, other versions with a wider spread will be available. The bare bulb without the reflector has a 120° beam angle. Aputure announced a few months ago that they are going to expand the budget-friendly amaran light fixture line-up. Aputure has been focusing on their current lighting products to be robust with better build quality and higher outputs, such as the NOVA P600c and Light Storm 1200d Pro. The amaran line is designed for entry-level productions or someone who wants to own gear at a more affordable price. The build quality will be less robust than that of the Aputure Light Storm series, but the new COB 60d and 60x is very compact, which looks like a good option for travel. My point of view is that most quality lighting fixtures have a place on set, and the goal shouldn’t be to find the perfect fixture and then buy a dozen. The goal should be to identify a good suite of lighting tools and understand how they might work best in any given situation. With that in mind, who is the perfect user for the bi-color or daylight amaran COB? With a color temperature range of 2700K-6500K, you can use the light for warm and cool lighting, giving you a lot more value for your money. When set to 5600K (daylight) and used with the included reflector attachment, the COB 60x can output 35,700 lux from a 1m distance. The light is rated as having a CRI (Color Rendering Index) of 96, meaning it can accurately portray the color of illuminated objects — CRI tops out at 100, so 96 is quite good. The COB 60x’s display lists the current color temperature and brightness, which can be adjusted via the knob or the Bluetooth app. I had to shoot the second part twice because I underestimated how powerful the COB 60x is. At 80% brightness, it proved too bright, resulting in the footage being blown out everywhere. It looked much better when I reshot it at 50% brightness, though I still had to tone down the highlights slightly.In addition to the included AC Power supply, The fixtures can be powered using the included Dual Sony NP-F Battery Plate, or a D-Tap Battery (cable sold separately), which attaches to the V-Mount plate located on the side of the light. No Gold Mount option is avavaible. The amaran 60d/60x comes with a Hyper Reflector (Mini) that Aputure states are specially designed with a 15° Beam Angle. This is a pretty tight degree however the light is very compact, and the reflector is much smaller than the more common you see on the Light Storm 120 through 600 series. Both fixtures have 65 watts of output from a COB (Chip On Board) LED cluster. The fixture itself, without reflector or mount, only weighs 675g / 1.49lbs. With the power supply, mounting pin added, it comes in at 2.060kg / 4.54lbs. The fixture doesn’t have a yoke. Instead, it uses a 1⁄4-20in Mounting Pin with Stand Adapter.
