About this deal

Easy to paint over with any type of paint (glycero or acrylic), these primers have a high opacifying power and increase the adhesion of finishing paint on very smooth surfaces, such as tile, glass or laminate cladding. Primers for interior wood

If the paint is chalking or is chipped, use an oil-based enamel undercoat primer after properly prepping the surface. These reinforce top coat adhesion on plasticized or PVC surfaces, and are resistant enough for exterior use. Can be covered over with any type of paint (e.g. glycero or acrylic). Wet surface primers The big issue with MDF is the edges, these are more porous than the top/bottom of the board and need more attention. To get a really smooth non-porous finish on the edges you can use wood filler or MDF edging tape. If the edges aren’t going to be seen simply add an extra coat of sealer/primer and rub down. What Alternatives are There to Specialist MDF Primers and Sealers? These microporous paints let the substrate breathe and improve the adhesion of finishing paint. Designed especially for woodwork (doors, window frames, skirting boards, etc.), they're suitable for indoor use and in any room (dry or wet). Primers for plastic and PVC claddingPriming bare timber is essential for the success of the whole paint system. The primer soaks into the timber creating a good bond and quenches the absorbency. This provides a sound base for the next coating. What kind of undercoat should I use before painting the walls with matt emulsion paint? A guy at the local Homebase recommend Alkali Resistant Primer Sealer in off white from International, but he also said that I could use a normal white emulsion paint, if the plaster is in good condition and I want to save money. Alkali Resistant Primer Sealer is supposed to seal salts in new plaster, but surely this is a not a problem as the house is over 35 years old? This is another type of water-based undercoat that will also include a primer. Depending on the brand it can be suitable for use on wood, masonry, and plaster. Undercoats for Wood Specification CoverageApproximately 6-8 sq metres per litre. ApplicationBrush, roller or spray. Drying TimeUnder normal circumstances the product should be touch dry within 4-6hrs if well ventilated and conditions are dry. Re-coat possible after 24hrs. Please note that drying times can different in cold and damp conditions. Applying the product in thin coats will allow a faster drying time and better finish. StorageProtect from frost and secure lid firmly to prevent paint from drying out. Surface PrepEnsure all surfaces are sound and clean, free from algae and moss. Remove any loose or flaking paint. ThinnersCan be let down with water if needed. You may also like…

No...definatly not..really..you should never use emulsion as an undercoat over previously painted gloss or satin finish. This type of paint is multi-purpose and renders the substrate uniform, concealing imperfections, and improves adhesion of the finishing paint. It also makes application and removal of other wall products easier, can be applied in any room (dry or wet) and can be covered over with any type of top coat (glycero or acrylic). It is best suited to interior surfaces in good condition. It provides strong adhesion on plaster, plasterboard, wood and cement, and gives economical coverage in large volumes. Plasterboard primer This paint is SO easy to use. The primer looked a little flimsy at first glance, a little bit ‘meh’, but BOY does it do a good job! The paint stayed consistent to the bottom of the tin and went on wonderfully. You’ll NEED good weather and you’ll NEED a clean surface but if you’ve got both of those, all you’ll need to turn an ugly yard into a garden is these two products. About the only time I could see where you'd want to prime over paint is if you wanted to paint over an oil based paint with an emulsion. In that case it would be a good idea to primer over the oil based paint with an oil based primer, and then apply the emulsion over the dry primer. An undercoat, as its name suggests, is the first layer of paint applied to a clean, dry substrate, before the finishing coat. Although it might be tempting to cut out this step - lazy as we are! - it really does make a big difference!Ideal for waterproofing the walls of your kitchen, bathroom or shower cubicle before laying tiles over the plasterboard, it also improves the adhesion of heavy decorative cladding such as Wood, waxed concrete, render, heavy vinyl wallpapers etc. Primers for tile, glass, laminate If you have a much larger surface to paint (tile, furniture, etc.), it's often more economical to apply an appropriate undercoat and then cover it with a conventional top coat - giving you a much wider choice of colour, texture and composition (glycero or acrylic).Avoid breathing in those nasty VOCs (volatile organic compounds) by equipping yourself with a protective mask!

So… should I spend money on more expensive primer sealer or splash white matt emulsion all over instead? Removing the old paint first is too much work and therefore not an option…! As you've now seen, there are many varieties of undercoat (or primer), with prices varying from single well into double figures for the same quantity of product! These are the key criteria that differentiate the many varieties of primer. Opacifying power With yours as it’s flaking, I would wash off what you can, maybe a gentle scrub with a large sponge scourer, rinse wall with clean watered, allow to fully dry, lightly sand over, dust down As well as classifying these paints by chemical composition, they can also be divided into universal, plasterboard and cover-all types. Universal undercoat

Represents the surface area that can be covered per litre of product. This is important as it lets you calculate how much paint you'll need to buy. Just like with finishing paints, the greater the coverage, the less paint you need - so the more money you can save. Tips for choosing
