About this deal

There have been a number of allegations of direct military support of Israel during the war by the US and the UK, including the supply of equipment (despite an embargo) and the participation of US forces in the conflict. [175] [176] [177] [178] [179] Many of these allegations and conspiracy theories [180] have been disputed and it has been claimed that some were given currency in the Arab world to explain the Arab defeat. [181] Aguilar then asked where the Iraqi leader was hiding the weapons. The agents had suspicions but weren't able to say for certain. As Aguilar noted, the rather more qualified private answers of the MI6 officers contrasted with Blair's categorical public statements that there were WMD in Iraq. The Mexican diplomat asked an obvious but pertinent question: what was the correlation between how well a weapon was hidden and the ease with which it could be used? The answer was that it was "a negative correlation"; that is, the better a weapon was hidden, the more time it would take to prepare for use. It was the British case that Hans Blix and the UN weapons inspectors could not find WMD because they were so well concealed. But it was also the British case that the weapons could be prepared for use in 45 minutes. The two positions, Aguilar was pointing out, could not be reconciled. The eight episodes, each of which focuses on the events and issues from the same day exactly five years ago, have been painstakingly researched by our team of journalists and woven into mini-dramas by the dramatist Ronan Bennett. They'll be played by an all-star cast including Kenneth Branagh, Juliet Stevenson and Tom Conti. (Watch the trailer here).

I felt sorry for the interviewer as I find her quite attractive, and wonder if someone could ask her on my behalf in a Joey-off-Friends kind of way: What you doing after the show? Following the war, Israel experienced a wave of national euphoria, and the press praised the military's performance for weeks afterwards. New "victory coins" were minted to celebrate. In addition, the world's interest in Israel grew, and the country's economy, which had been in crisis before the war, flourished due to an influx of tourists and donations, as well as the extraction of oil from the Sinai's wells. [200] The aftermath of the war also saw a baby boom, which lasted for four years. [201] This refers to the sourcing of news stories from parties (usually governments) who are awarded a great deal of trust despite a long and well-documented history of issuing false stories, outright lies and distortions. Following the war, Egypt initiated clashes along the Suez Canal in what became known as the War of Attrition. [221] Palestinian terrorismNews programmes should not generally stage reconstructions of current events because of the risk of confusing the audience. But reconstructions staged by others may be reported in the usual way. Once her mouth was open it was difficult to stop her now she was in full flow. For reasons of safety, the General had already scuttled behind the white flag of acquiescence but the interviewer battled on, attempting to put a question to her. The cheek of it! Claire Short immediately castigated the interviewer, (have I mentioned how attractive-looking the interviewer is?), for committing such rudeness, screaming: "You're not listening to me!" Seeing supposed 'events' happening before our eyes, even if identified as a dramatisation, is beguiling. It can lead to the belief that one has experienced something in fact, when all that has been seen is someone else's interpretation. This is justified in a different arena, but not in a programme which is supposedly a serious news programme.
