About this deal

It contained 130 different herbs, plants, flowers, and other ingredients. All brought together with an alcoholic wine base. Green Chartreuse, with an ABV of 55 percent, is the bolder of the two spirits. It starts out rather sharp and herbal, settling into a warm, almost minty finish. The book The Practical Hotel Steward (1900) states that Green Chartreuse contains " cinnamon, mace, lemon balm, dried hyssop flower tops, peppermint, thyme, costmary, arnica flowers, genepi, and angelica roots", and that yellow chartreuse is "similar to above, adding cardamom seeds and socctrine aloes." [11] The monks intended their liqueur to be used as medicine. The exact recipes for all forms of Chartreuse remain trade secrets and are known at any given time only to the three monks [ inconsistent] who prepare the herbal mixture. [12] The only formally known element of the recipe is that it uses 130 different plants. [13] :11 On the palate, it tastes a lot like it smells: sweet with notes of zesty citrus, honey, warm spices, and mint. There’s also a light licorice and violet flavor, and an overall herbal complexity to it.

Chartreuse Verte’ is renowned for its natural vibrant green color, as well as its potency and aromatic complexity derived from a blend of 130 plants, flowers, bark, roots, and spices. It boasts an intense, herbaceous, peppery aroma that captivates the senses. Minty notes, pine sap, and zesty citrus fruits are foremost on the palate, with a bittersweet tea finish that lingers on the tongue, enhancing the overall tasting experience. It’s a bold and flavorful spirit with an ABV of 55%. Yellow ChartreuseChartreuse VEP (Vieillissement Exceptionnellement Prolongé) is produced using the same methods as the traditional cuvée, though it is aged for a longer period of time in oak casks. Chartreuse VEP is produced in both green and yellow formats. The Élixir Végétal de la Grande-Chartreuse has the same base as Green Chartreuse, though is distilled to a higher ABV (around 70%). Liqueur du 9° Centenaire was created to celebrate the original abbey’s 900th anniversary. It is slightly sweeter than the original Green Chartreuse. Aside from the orange flavor, Grand Marnier also has notes of vanilla and oak. This makes it taste quite different from Yellow Chartreuse. We say: Stirred and boozy with rye whiskey punch and spice smoothed by Chartreuse and sweet vermouth. White Chartreuse (30% ABV) was produced and sold between 1860 and 1880, and again from 1886 to 1903. [13] :11 Génépi [ edit ] Glayva is a Scottish whisky liqueur that is a mixture of Scotch whiskies, spices, fruits, and honey. Originating in Edinburgh, Glalyva is a good substitute for Yellow Chartreuse thanks to its sweet and warm flavor and low alcohol content.

Bakshi, Pema. "The Final Frontier Of 'Ugly' Fashion Is Shrek Green". www.refinery29.com . Retrieved March 27, 2023. In 1972, Chartreuse entered a high taxation era so the ABV of Yellow Chartreuse was dropped from 43% to 40% but in 2010, they began recreating the original Yellow Chartreuse as La Reine des Liqueurs. At the original proof, it has a better balance between sugar, alcohol and herbs. Serve chilled, not with ice as not to dilute it. 4 Useful FactsYellow Chartreuse’s counterpart is Green Chartreuse ( Chartreuse Verte), which is an herbal liqueur made by the same monks from a different secret blend of herbs and plants. Green Chartreuse came over 100 years earlier in 1737, and it’s the bolder of the two spirits at 55% ABV. Working alongside these trailblazers to develop a series of therapeutic essences called eaux-de-vie (water of life), the revolutionary monks were later gifted a mysterious recipe for a powerful elixir for ‘long life’ by French diplomat François-Annibal d´Estrées, who had learned of their work. It was highly complicated, and the monks set to work to understand its intricacies in 1605. The journey from elixir to liqueur In 2007, a special edition was created by the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France (Best Craftsmen of France) in partnership with the Chartreuse distillery. It is yellow in color (45% alcohol). [16] Flavor [ edit ] In general though, Yellow Chartreuse pairs very well with gin, whiskey, mezcal, citrus, honey, mint, and other herbal or bitter liqueurs.
