About this deal

Conveniently located a couple of miles from the attractive village of Sheepwash and on the London to Land's End cycle trail, this is a great location from which to explore. Walkers and cyclists will also be in their element with the stunning Dartmoor National Park within 20 miles. Alternatively, head towards the coast and enjoy the spectacular beaches and picturesque fishing villages the area is famed for, including Westward Ho! (16 miles), Hartland (20 miles), and Clovelly (18 miles). There are also many traditional market towns and villages to explore in the surrounding area such as Bideford (13 miles), where you can jump on the MS Oldenburg and take a day trip to Lundy. Other local attractions include RHS Rosemoor (7 miles) and Dartington Crystal (7.5 miles). The lodge itself was beautiful and exceeded our expectations. The fizz and Shepard’s pie on arrival was an extra surprise that topped off the experience. Owners were very helpful and available when needed. The hot tub and log fire also made our trip. We have already recommended to family and friends, a definite 10/10. Each hut is individually thought out with own private space. If you want a lovely private place for peaceful place this is it. The Cap's drinking and violence deteriorate. As the novel opens, Jaxie is carrying a damaged eye and is becoming prey to his own murderous anger. But fortune steps in: Sid is as much a danger to himself as to anyone that comes within the gravitational pull of his rage. Jaxie comes home to find that Sid has been working on his Hilux in the shed and it has rolled on him and killed him. Jaxie knows immediately that "the old turd was cactus".

The storytelling is intense, with fitting profanity, painful memories, and puzzling understandings…. Just before a summer storm one time when the Cap was away shooting horses and sawing them into prime Angus beef.”

Features

As you might expect in a novel that stars an Irish-Catholic ex-priest and a teenager from Monkton (Monk-ton, got it?) hanging out in a shepherd's (!) hut near a salt (!) lake, the author contemplates questions of spirituality, using biblical themes and letting his characters meditate on pantheism in the Australian wilderness. But the question whether there is a God or not is not the main concern here; rather, it's the question how to overcome alienation and loneliness, how to learn empathy and to feel connected to nature and other people. Ultimately, it's also the question of how we can feel ourselves. Traditionally, curved corrugated iron would be used to make the roof to allow rainwater to run off, but sometimes the roof would be made from felt and insulated with lambswool to help keep heat within the living space.

Jaxie gives the novel a distinctive voice, and in that it reminds me of two other novels with distinctive English voices: Milkman by Anna Burns set in Northern Ireland, and Swing Hammer Swing by Jeff Torrington set in Scotland. Here’s an example from Shepher's Hut: SJ: The Australian landscape is very important in all of your novels, but people more often associate you with the sea. Why did you set The Shepherd’s Hut in the saltlands of Western Australia? And what is special about the Australian landscape? The author was born in 1960 in Perth, western Australia. He has a couple of dozen novels, two of which were short-listed for the Booker Prize. He set a record by winning Australia’s novel of the year award (Miles Franklin) four times. His best-known books are Cloudstreet, Breath and Dirt Music.I never did know what to make of Fintan MacGillis. In the end you could say I knew what kind of man he was and maybe that was the important thing. … During our stay it was filled with peace, great views and happiness. Clean accommodation with pleasant and friendly owners Brenda and Dave. Cannot wait to stay again in the future ☺️ To find out more on shepherd hut size, read this in-depth blog on shepherd’s hut dimensions and this post on shepherd’s hut floor plans. High Rigg Shepherd's Hideaway is the ultimate getaway for a couple seeking to spend quality time together, exploring the majestic landscape of the Northern Pennines AONB and Cumbria.

There are ample facilities to store and cook/prepare food so we had some breakfast at the hut each morning before heading out and then an evening meal on return. I was drawn to this book, my first by this (twice Booker shortlisted) author, by an intriguing excerpt in The Guardian from a speech he gave while promoting the book, one in which he sets out clearly his interest in exploring the topic of toxic masculinity and it's poisonous influence on boys in turn marginalised by society.Luxury huts, such as this one at Brosterfield Farm or this one at Benllech, with a fixed double bed at one end, kitchen and living space in the middle and an en-suite toilet and shower room at the other end would start from 16″ long to be able to fit everything in. Anything with blood in it can probably go bad. Like meat. And it’s the blood that makes me worry. It carries things you don’t even know you got. Sometimes I wonder if that nasty meanness is in me too, like he’s passed it on. Does that mean I’m gunna be that way? To Lee? And our own kids ... thinking like that puts the wind up me. To live you gotta be hard, I know that. Last year, I read this author's "landscape memoir" about Western Australia, Island Home. Nobody ever writes about this area of Australia! It is full of unique creatures, flora and fauna, and the interesting types of people who would inhabit such a place. (Coincidentally I loved that book so much that I 1)Included it on my Best Reads of 2017 list, 2) Gave my copy to my in-laws who were heading to Australia, and then felt sad and bought another copy for my self, and 3) Made Tim Winton an author I wanted to read more of in 2018. Traditionally, shepherd’s huts were made from corrugated iron side panels, a corrugated iron roof and set on four cast iron wheels. Each hut would have a draw-bar for easy transportation around a farm or countryside. Notice the smaller front wheels on the image above, which is to aid maneuverability. Lovely cabin on arrival all the lights where lit up and looked so pretty, everything inside was clean and the homemade shepherd's pie and bottle of bubbly was a great extra touch."
