About this deal

Hot air balloon debate – which character should stay in the balloon? Why? Evidence must be provided from the story.

What is your first impression of the character? What makes you think this? Invite the children to make comments about external features (what they look like) and character traits. As the story develops, ask the children if they still agree with their first impression. Encourage the children to update their response. Name of character Select from the following activities to help children make explicit their response to and knowledge of a character. Book Hook How is your character seen by the other characters in the book? This activity explores the relationships that develop between the different characters. Predicament What does the author’s choice of the word ‘hesitant’ tell you about the rabbit who is visiting Horatio? These are examples of the types of questions that could be asked during book discussion that would encourage children to make explicit their response to and knowledge of the character. They encourage children to think about: Then they discover that Russia’s secret-agent minks are in London, could they have something to do with the theft? But nothing is quite what it seems, and the Royal Rabbits soon realise they are going to need help from an old friend to solve this mystery…

Hotseating (initially use teacher in role for this activity with the children asking questions they want to know the answer to) Direct and Indirect Characterisation Make a Royal Rabbit personnel file – for each member of The Royal Rabbits; there should be a picture, a description of their features and character traits. Create a character profile 10 facts After closing the first book in this series, a few weeks ago, I wanted more. I fell in love with the little brave rabbit Shylo and with the wonderful world Montefiore crafted. Unfortunately the next books weren't translated in Dutch, so I had to get the English ones. (No problem at all, but if I had known that I might have gotten the first one in English too!)Nobody knows how a sneaky thief managed to take the Siberian Diamond from right under the Queen’s nose – but Shylo and the brave Royal Rabbits of London will do whatever it takes to solve the case and return the jewel to its rightful place. The three way chats, in which they are joined by other animals, about web spinning, themselves, other humans—are as often informative as amusing, and the whole tenor of appealing wit and pathos will make fine entertainment for reading aloud, too.

Explore the way the author handles direct characterisation (explicitly stated) and indirect which may be through narrative observation. The rabbits who make up the secret society all have their own larger-than-life personalities and adult readers will notice some nods to the sorts of characters who populate grown-up spy stories in these furry fellows. The world of the Royal Rabbits is also richly imagined, filled with structure, hierarchy, and international co-operation. Shylo has always been the runt of the litter, the weakest and quietest of all of his family. His siblings spend their days making fun of him for not being like the rest of them. But when Shylo stumbles across a band of ratzis and overhears their evil plan to take a photo of the Queen in her nightie, it's up to this unlikely hero to travel to London and inform the Royal Rabbits of London about the diabolical plot! The Royal Rabbits of London have a proud history of protecting the royal family and now the secret society need to leap into action to stop the ratzis...Shylo is the runt of his family—something his siblings refuse to let him forget. But none of them know of his secret, forbidden friendship with an old rabbit on the edge of the forest. When Shylo overhears rats plotting against the Queen of England, he informs the old rabbit, who sends little Shylo on the adventure of his life. Her spouse Simon Sebag Montefiore has written the non-fiction books “The Romanovs,”“Jerusalem: The Biography,”“Young Stalin,”“Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar” and “Catherine the Great and Potemkin.” His fiction works include “One Night in Winter,”“Sashenka,”“My Affair with Stalin” and “King’s Parade.”
