The word ‘terrible’ is used to describe the Gruffalo. Can you think of synonyms for ‘terrible’? Can you think of other words to describe the Gruffalo? Not only are the Gruffalo rooms a fantastic addition to the Chessington Safari hotel they were the highlight of our trip. What you get is an experience like no other which was really special for the children. When the park closed hotel guests have the opportunity to get close to the animals with an evening walk around the Wanyama reserve. This coupled with the new AMAZU treetop walkway was so much fun and gave excellent views of the monkey enclosures below. The TV was a big hit for the girls as they watched their favourite programmes, quoting lines from the Gruffalo whilst enjoying their Lush Cosmetics themed bubble bath. It made an exciting bath time and they loved jumping out the bath into the Gruffalo towels. The theming and attention to detail is what makes these rooms so special, it really was a dream hotel room for the girls. The walls were beautifully decorated with Gruffalo painted scenes, bespoke furniture and even the carpet had a woodland scene complete with little footprints to follow.
The rooms had everything you needed for a relaxing stay . Each room had tea and coffee making facilities, air conditioning, fridge, a large wardrobe with a good amount of hangers and a good size desk. Along with the TV’s in the children’s area and bathroom there was also a wall mounted HDTV in the adults bedroom.The Gruffalo, too, has won many awards, including the Nestlé Smarties Prize and the Blue Peter Award for The Best Book to Read Aloud – and in 2009 was voted the UK’s favourite bedtime story. But Gruffalo fans are everywhere: the story has been translated into over 100 languages, including Thai, Russian, Scots and Maori . . . and for Classics scholars, there is even a Latin edition.

Once all the paperwork was finalised, we received our bands for early access into the Chessington theme park, made our dining reservations and we were advised of the meet and greet times to come face to face with the Gruffalo himself in the hotel. The Gruffalo is one of the world’s best-loved monsters. Since it was first published in 1999, the award-winning story of his encounter with the little brown mouse in the deep dark wood has continued to delight children and adults the world over. My husband and I had the burger which was delicious and the girls had pasta and pizza. There was also a buffet restaurant in the adjacent Azteca hotel but this looked a little too hectic for us.The girls loved finding the interactive elements in our room, such as the giant wooden wheel which when turned would say phrases from the book including “twit twoo” and “a mouse took a stroll through the deep dark wood”. A giant 3D Gruffalo head was peering through the foliage into the room. “WOW” the girls exclaimed when they when they first caught glimpse of the Gruffalo but it’s what makes these rooms so special. Created by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, the most successful author/illustrator partnership in picture book publishing, The Gruffalo is a modern classic, and both mouse and monster have become stars of stage and screen as well as story-time favourites.
Five years after the publication of The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo’s Child was introduced to the world, starring in her very own adventure – and proved an instant hit. It was voted The Children’s Book of the Year at the British Book of the Year Awards in 2005. The Gruffalo's arms, legs and head all move for realistic and fun game play! It is interesting to explore the fact that the Gruffalo (big, powerful and strong) is still able to be frightened and even frightened of a small thing and that is ok. Even big brothers or sisters, Mummies and Daddies can be frightened sometimes and sharing that fear or talking about it with someone can help - perhaps if the Gruffalo had a friend to walk with then they could have discussed the fear of the mouse and the end of the story might have been very different.
