About this deal

Some excellent family recipes that do truly reflect the Middle East’s delicious foods in general and, more precisely, Syria.”- Fisherman3 Scents and Flavors: A Syrian Cookbook”is organized like a meal, opening with appetizers, juices, and main courses, side dishes, and desserts. Booked by chapters on antiperspirants and post-meal hand soaps, medicinal oils, concoctions, and perfumes, this comprehensive cookbook is a feast for all of your senses. Imad’s Syrian Kitchen (HQ) is no ordinary cookbook in the way that the restaurant of the same name is no ordinary eatery. Situated in Kingsley Court, Carnaby Street, the restaurant is in the heart of vibrant London, where counter-culture has been the rage for decades. Kingsley Court boasts a number of ethnic restaurants, some so popular that tables need to be booked weeks ahead. I went to eat at Imad’s Syrian Kitchen mostly because I wanted to support the restaurateur who moved to London but not out of the desire to travel the world. Imad Alarnab is a refugee whose courage and fortitude have enabled him to set up a new life in the UK. Where once he served food to diners in his three restaurants plus juice bars and cafes in Damascus, he now does so in London. His newly published cookbook, subtitled a love letter from Damascus to London, tells his story. He is currently co-authoring with Lucy Malouf on several award-winning works and cooking at Melbourne’s MoMo restaurant.

In this comprehensive cookbook, you will be exposed to practical instructions on Middle Eastern cooking techniques by one of the most famous chefs in the Arab world, as well as step-by-step explanations of over 200 irresistible recipes. Attractive cooking is divided into 15 chapters, including: If I had any other choice, I would have definitely taken it. [Fleeing] wasn’t the easiest but it was somehow the safest,” he says. “When I was in Syria during the war, people were saying, ‘It’s not safe to go out of the house because maybe you’re going to die’. But I needed to feed my family, if I stayed in the house they would die from hunger. There’s no good choice or bad choice, but maybe it’s the only one you can make. Beautifully done cookbook with recipes from our home country. I appreciated the more complicated recipes alongside the simpler street food recipes. The pictures and stories were done perfectly.”- Nannie D. Imad’s Syrian Kitchen is divided into chapters which are interspersed with further details about Imad’s journey to the UK as well as information about Syrian cuisine. Amidst the recipes are essays about his love of Damascus, his love for his wife and daughters, and a moving piece about his beloved mother who died shortly after he left Damascus. My name is Imad Alarnab, and I was a refugee, an asylum seeker, a displaced person, an illegal immigrant. What does that make you think of? Be honest. Does it make you think of people deciding one day to leave their home country for a more exciting job or better opportunities elsewhere…We didn’t ‘choose’ to leave, it was not a decision any of us came to lightly. Every single one of us was forced. We had no choice. We fled our homes that we loved because we were no longer safe, or because our homes had been destroyed. Our families were in danger and we had to do what we could to keep them safe. What would you have done? We don’t want to travel illegally. We don’t want to take advantage of anything or anyone; we want to be part of a community, to work, to play our role in society again. We are all just like you.”Buy this book for your reference library if you are at all interested in a book with beautiful pictures, fantastic stories, but most importantly, yummy recipes.”- Angela T. Szpojda Complete with heartfelt stories, stunning photography, and beautiful illustrations, Imad's Syrian Kitchen features 90 sensational recipes celebrating the flavors of Syria.
